Tribbles Invade Earth!

Print Print this page.

The IDW comic series that started last year, has been retelling the classic TV episodes within the new movie continuity. Next comes the Tribbles, and this time around they invade Earth.

Written by Mike Johnson with assistance by Roberto Orci (co-writer and producer of the new Star Trek films), the comic is canon in the movie universe. Mixing old storylines with new, original stories, the Star Trek comic bridges the gap between the first Star Trek movie in 2009 and its upcoming sequel, set to release next year.

The Star Trek sequel will continue the “rebooted” universe, taking Kirk, Spock and the original crew into a new timeline of adventures. The title of second Star Trek film remains unnamed, and its villain (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) is unknown, although rumored to be Khan.

Johnson, who also co-writes DC’s Supergirl, has been tasked by IDW and Orci to set things up for the Star Trek movie sequel as he writes the new Star Trek comic.

Newsarama recently talked to the writer to find out more about the Tribbles and what else readers can expect from IDW’s Star Trek universe. Here’s an excerpt from the interview.

Newsarama: Yeah, let’s talk about the Tribble story, which starts in this month’s issue #11 and continues in August’s #12, retelling the episode, “The Trouble with Tribbles.” What can you reveal about the story, which you’ve titled “The Truth About Tribbles?”

Johnson: We’ll get to see the Tribble homeworld, meet the Tribbles’ natural predators, and witness the Tribble invasion of Earth. It’s equal parts fuzzy and epic.

Newsarama:  Is there anything else you want to tell fans about the Star Trek comic book?

Johnson: If you like it, tell your friends! I’ve met readers who were surprised to find out there was a series tied into the movie universe, and who were not huge comics fans before this. Hopefully we can get some cross-pollination going. Get comics fans into Trek, and Trekfans into comics!

Print Print this page.

Spiderman, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, AND Phineas and Ferb? “Mission Marvel”is the name, and the blame goes to none other than Dr. Doofenshmirtz. Wiping the superhero’s powers is credited to the latest “inator” scheme accidentally created by Doofenshmirtz. It will then be up to Phineas and Ferb to team up with the Marvel Super Heroes to help them regain their power.

“Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel is an exciting animated special for everyone at Disney and Marvel. Bringing together the worlds of Phineas and Ferb and Marvel’s The Avengers is a ton of fun for fans of both properties,” said Dan Buckley, Publisher & President of the Print, Animation & Digital Divisions, Marvel Worldwide, Inc. “It’s a thrilling opportunity for these two franchises to take advantage of each other in a way that may go beyond this one special. Fans of all ages are in for a very special treat!”

Release is set for Summer of 2013.

The Dark Knight Rises Bleak and Beautiful

Print Print this page.

Don’t come to watch The Dark Knight Rises and expect your spirits to be buoyed and your sadness lifted. Joe Morgenstern of the Wall Street Journal offers this review of the much awaited third film in a trilogy,  ”The Dark Knight Rises”.

“The Dark Knight Rises” is notable for many things—thrilling chases, supercool vehicles, majestic vistas, an epic scale that hasn’t been achieved since “The Lord of the Rings,” a redemptive climax that brings an end, more or less, to a complex saga. The most stunning thing about the film, though—and this is said not by way of praise, but with anxious wonderment—is how depressing and truly doomy most of it is. Batman, played by a marvelous actor with a singular gift for depicting pain, suffers mortally. Drums beat incessantly—before, during and after a series of numbing, Neanderthal brawls between Batman and Bane. History takes a double beating from a script that reprocesses the storming of the Bastille into an attack by terrorist thugs.

Bruce can be forgiven the bleakness of his initial mood. His caped alter ego was unjustly blamed for the death of Gotham City’s district attorney, Harvey Dent, who was anything but the model citizen he’s become in public memory. Now the billionaire socialite has turned antisocial, a Howard Hughes-like hermit (minus the screwiness) licking his psychic wounds and living with the all-too-real injuries of former battles. But two threats conspire to end his solitude.

One of them is brought home—into his own home—by Anne Hathaway’s Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman. It’s intriguingly difficult to discern her motives, or loyalties, for most of the movie.

But the most proximate source of the threatening storm is Bane—an implacable, bemuscled villain who wears a mask over his disfigured face, and who speaks in muffled tones that make Darth Vader sound like an elocution teacher. (He’s not the only one with intelligibility problems; the movie’s use of bass frequencies to convey threat and evil does for dialogue what amped-up rock does for lyrics.) As played by the excellent Tom Hardy, who has porked up for the role and is essentially unrecognizable, Bane is not merely evil enough but ambitious enough to bring Batman back into action, since he plans nothing less than the city’s enslavement, if not its total destruction.

Dark comic books have always been around, but with a difference; as pictures and words on paper, they’ve allowed readers to choose their own degree of involvement. “The Dark Knight Rises” allows no choice.

Disney and Marvel–Together on Big Hero 6

Print Print this page.

Walt Disney Studios Animation is officially joining forces with Marvel. It’s early in the game, so no dates have been shared about ANYTHING.

Big Hero 6 is not as well known as The Avengers, but it’s another group of powerful individuals with wildly different histories and powers, united by the Japanese government as a crisis-fighting super-squad.

When you think about it, what problem couldn’t be solved by a sun god, a robot dragon, a smarty-pants kid, a woman with a magic purse, a samurai made of precious metal, and an energy ball?

Holy Cash, Batman! $850,000 for Number One

Print Print this page.

Some serious coinage has been traded this week.

A collector has sold a Batman No. 1 comic to an investment partnership for $850,000.

Dallas-based Heritage Auctions arranged the private transaction and announced the sale Thursday. Heritage vice president Ed Jaster says the collector had paid $315,000 for the comic about two years ago. The comic book cost 10 cents when it was published in 1940.

Do the math. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that a 170% profit?

Not a bad way to make a living.

C2E2 Post-Report

Print Print this page.

A weekend of human density, popular culture, digital, print, and toy entertainment came to a close on Sunday April 15th with the McCormick Place north building lights dimming at 5pm to signal it’s time to get out, but the love and excitement of what was in this massive building continues every day in the fans, and companies that buy and create the entertainment that has become mainstream like a blur.

Q101′s presence & table shocked, and excited a lot of people at the convention. The fans and support poured in non-stop through the entire weekend, with supporters normal, and super-hero alike. We traversed the show floor and beyond, reaching every man, woman, child, and cape we saw to remind them that Q101 is as strong as ever.

The Incredible Hulk, as you can see here, couldn’t contain his excitement when he saw the Q101 table.

The Q101 puppet kept showing up in the darndest places! Like here

And here

And here.

The response, support, and feeling of camaraderie during the convention was amazing, and we thank all the fans that came out to see us, and also enjoyed the convention!

Q101 also got into the John Barrowman (Doctor Who, Torchwood) Q & A, and he delighted the crowd, leaving everyone in stitches with his frank and honest answers, stories, and singing.

And no Q101 appearance would be complete without our mascot, the endearing Mr. Bananas who came to say hi to the kids!

Q101 was the perfect description of divide & conquer, we had the convention covered on all fronts, with more than enough to go around! Q101 is popular culture, Q101 is Chicago’s Alternative, WE ARE Q101!!

Q101 @ C2E2, Day One

Print Print this page.

Certainly one of Q101′s most arduous adventures into the wild, is the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2). It’s quite a task to work one of these conventions, but Q101 balanced it all with a steady hand!

Q101 found itself in Artist Alley, but look! We had a corner, which means more space. We did what we’re good at, and that’s make a crowd. We talked about Q101, talked with our fans about Jamboree, sold merch, and had an overall great time! Just like this kid, one of our excited interns:

Once we sent up out table, the traffic just kept coming! It was non-stop until around 3pm:

Today was the first of three days, and the fans came out in droves! Here’s to a great day one, and 2 more to come! And tomorrow, be sure to wear your Q101 shirt with pride, and if we see it, you may get some “treats”!!

We will have our own corner of the world, in Artist’s Alley, booth #O11. We will be wandering the convention floor, selling shirts, handing out goodies, spreading the goodwill and cheer of Chicago’s Alternative! Q101 will be there the ENTIRE duration of the convention. There will be magic! Excitement! Tomfoolery! And maybe this guy:

Did you miss out on our text contest this week to win weekend passes? Never fear friends, be sure to wear your Q101 shirt when you’re in line Friday morning. You may be able to save your money *wink, wink*.

We will have raffles, smiling people, a photographer, and a presence like no other, by the one and only Q101!
