Worth Gets Scarier Than Normal This Weekend!

Print Print this page.

Lots of suburbs will be celebrating Halloween this weekend with events…Q101 is spotlighting one that has been especially supportive to us over the past 15 months (plus, Harold is a southsider at heart):  The Village of Worth.  They have an event called “Haunts Against Hunger” happening this Sunday, 10/28/12 at 5pm that you should check out with your kids!  First things first: Come in costume and with some non-perishable food in hand.  You will be rewarded for your good deeds:  The “Haunt” begins at the Worth Village Hall (7112 West 111th Street, Worth, IL)  with a visit from The Reaper (Think: Joakim Noah only with better hands and rattier clothes on…I kid, I kid…think of that giant ghoul from “Scrooged”) and then the kids are escorted by the Worth Police (Remember when they did that for you that one time?  This time it will actually be fun!) AND hearses from LasRydes Hearse Club for a haunted tour of Worth’s creepier decked out denizens.  Food and drink await you at the end.  The weather will be pretty good Sunday so check this event out!   More info can be had here:  http://villageofworth.com/Worth/HauntsAgainstHunger/index.html

Organizers say their goal is to raise awareness and donations for the Food Pantry at the Worth Methodist Church at 7100 W. 112th Street. Food donations may be brought to this event or dropped off prior in the Village Hall or Police Station.

They are primarily looking to accept canned or nonperishable foods like macaroni and cheese, tuna, peanut butter and cereal. For the holidays, the pantry is requesting items for Thanksgiving and Christmas such as side dishes, stuffing mixes, mashed potatoes, jellos, sweet potatoes, cranberries, gravy, cake mixes and frostings. This year we are also collecting donations of pet food! If it is raining heavy at the time of our event, we are moving all activities to the Worth Methodist Church located at 7100 W. 112th Street.

Thanks to primary organizer Officer Anthony Ritz for his support of Q101, and for letting the Q101 Mobile Command Center of Death, Destruction, Terror, and Mayhem FLY down 111th!

Morrissey Heads to Chicago

Print Print this page.

Morrissey doesn’t need your help. “It’s my life to wreck my own way,” he crooned languidly on “Alma Matters,” two songs into the kickoff date of his latest American tour in Boston last week.

Contrary to that sentiment, however, the notorious malcontent seemed exceptionally at ease, both with himself and his audience. Over the course of a tidy, 100-minute set that featured 20 songs – five by his former (and evidently never-to-be-again) band, the Smiths – he teased his enraptured fans, whipped up dust devils with his microphone cord, pounded percussion on his chest as if to soothe his heart palpitations, lay down fetally in the spotlight and otherwise thoroughly entertained himself at the lip of the stage, where he was so clearly born to live out his years.

The band – longtime collaborator (“the gorgeous”) Boz Boorer, bassist Solomon Walker, keyboardist Gustavo Manzur, guitarist Jesse Tobias and new drummer Anthony Burulcich (of the Bravery) – took the stage like henchmen in their trademark matching T-shirts, which on this night read “Ringling Beats Animals.” (Earlier this week, when they performed on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, each bore the word “Thug.”)

Not for the last time of the night, “Maladjusted” underscored just how much eerie psychedelia Morrissey’s band can often muster beneath the frontman’s sui generis vocal style. The Smiths’ “Meat Is Murder” came across like an especially bad trip, with Burulcich pounding mallets on a huge kettle drum and Tobias’ guitar mewling like animals in the slaughterhouse while gruesome bits of PETA’s anti-carnivore film “Meet Your Meat” screened overhead.

Morrissey will perform at the Chicago Theater on October 27, 2012 at 8:00 p.m.

Shower With Someone-Save The World

Print Print this page.

What better way to conserve our world’s resources than showering with one you love? Hell, you don’t even have to LOVE the one you shower with, but liking them could go a long way to building and maintaining your “relationship”.

AXE, a brand of grooming products including shower gel, is doing a “showerpooling” water conservation campaign with a video narrated by “Twilight’s” Nikki Reed and stops at 10 college campuses, including a visit to Northwestern University planned for October 17.

The campaign centers around a pledge at Facebook.com/axe to install water-efficient showerheads (which AXE will give out to college students for free), reduce shower time to five minutes or less and, of course, invite a friend into the shower. Those who take the online pledge are eligible to win prizes.

Their slogan: “It’s not just environmentally-friendly. It’s all kinds of friendly.”

Description of the School of Rock, BY the School of Rock:

Our performance-based teaching method is an immersive experience that inspires our students to be their best. We get our students playing music as quickly as possible because we know that that is what our students want to do. As a result our students become more interested in the theory of music.

We deliver an authentic experience using professional equipment, a staff of seasoned musicians, and performances on real rock stages, at real rock venues in front of real live audiences.

Our instructors live to play and play to live. They are experienced professional musicians that can instruct students on the finer points of their instrument, while at the same time educating them on everything that goes into putting on a great live show.

We teach and perform music that our students love to play and our audiences love to here. From the fundamental roots of rock and roll through classic rock, funk, reggae, heavy metal, alternative, indie and prog rock – we share, engage and celebrate it all.

School Of Rock Kids will be playing Songs by: Tenacious D, Spinal Tap, Ween, Primus and More…

Flugtag 2012

Print Print this page.

From Wiki:  Red Bull Flugtag (German: flight day, airshow) is an event owned and operated by Red Bull in which competitors attempt to fly homemade size (max 10m / 30 ft) and weight (max 150 kg / 330 lbs) limited human-powered flying machines.

The “flying” machines are usually launched off a pier about 30 feet (9.1 m) high into the sea (or suitably sized reservoir of water). Most competitors enter for the entertainment value, and the flying machines rarely fly at all.

Date and Time:

Saturday, September 8
11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Location:

North Avenue Beach
West LaSalle Drive
Chicago, Illinois 60614
