David Draiman – Device

davidDavid Draiman is gearing up to release the self-titled debut album from his new band Device. In Loudwire’s interview with Draiman, he talks about his approach to making the Device album, given his long history with Disturbed, as well as the wealth of incredible guest appearances he was able to secure for the disc. An excerpt from the interview:

When you first announced the project Device, you mentioned Nine Inch Nails and Ministry as references, and listening to the album, there are definitely industrial elements. But there’s also this sense of familiarity in you vocal delivery that your Disturbed fans are likely to identify with. Was there a conscious effort to offer both the unfamiliar and the familiar?

There was no conscious effort, that’s for certain. My voice is associated with Disturbed — that’s how my voice is branded and when I go into the more staccato, rhythmic delivery, which is just a very comfortable and familiar place, it’s a powerful place for me to go vocally. It’s felt natural since the day I first walked up to the audition that at a time when the rest of the guys were in a band called Brawl and wanted to play cover songs to see if we could break the ice with each other.

I challenged them to play me their originals and they’re like, “What are you going to sing,” and I’m like, “I’ll come up with something,” and what I came up with was, “Your mind won’t let you say that you want me.” And that was the first chorus from ‘Want’ off of ‘The Sickness’ and the band that was Brawl become Disturbed. Back then, I was still feeling out lyrical delivery that was rhythmic in nature that always had a very specific defined cadence to it, that was somewhat rapid fire or staccato in nature. It’s something I’ve been doing for years and it’s something that’s been a part of who I am. It’s become identified with Disturbed because that’s the band I am a part of. I’m the lead singer for that band so people are going to know that.

Flashback to 1988 – The Pixies

Print Print this page.

pixAt the time of its release, ‘Surfer Rosa’ was no big deal. The Pixies’ debut album came less than six months after their first EP, ‘Come On Pilgrim,’ which included a handful of songs remixed from their scrappy demo tape. But ‘Come On Pilgrim’ didn’t stir much interest outside of a small college-rock cult audience. So when ‘Surfer Rosa’ hit shelves on March 21, 1988, it wasn’t like tons of fans were waiting for it.

But over the years the album’s rep grew. And grew. And grew. Today, on the 25th anniversary of its release, ‘Surfer Rosa’ is considered an indie rock cornerstone, a masterpiece of the soft-loud-soft dynamic used by everyone from Nirvana to the Smashing Pumpkins to Spoon. It’s an essential record that connects the dots between ‘80s college rock and its evolution toward ‘90s indie.

Dan Patrick hit it on the head on AM 1530 WCKG when he said the next team should make good old #54 a player coach. The Bears should have, COULD have, offer Urlacher a role in the organization beyond being a punching bag on the field. They did not.

Too bad. #54 should be a lifetime Bear. Learn from this…

Get The Job You Want By COLD E-MAIL

Print Print this page.

Cold PhoneIf you’ve read an article about job searching — ever — chances are you know that 70% to 80% of positions never get advertised. This reality is mega-frustrating when you’re hunting for a new gig. You can hit up desirable employers directly, but the “cold” email method is rife with uncertainty. Is reaching out to someone you’ve never met even worth the effort? Well, yes and no: The counterintuitive trick to cold-emailing employers is to never send a cold email. No matter how clear, concise or witty your message, its likelihood of yielding the desired response — actually, any response — is low. Employers are busy, their inboxes are packed and you’re a stranger. A stranger who is asking for something.

So what do you do? Jess Adamiak is on a mission to help you communicate better. Jess identifies five tips for better chances of getting noticed when “cold” emailing for a job.

1. Identify the Decision Maker

Channel your inner detective. Who calls the hiring shots at your dream employer? (Heads up: It is highly unlikely this person works in the HR department). You want to talk to someone with the power to give you, or help you get, what you want.

2. Work Your Network for a “Warm” Lead

It doesn’t take much to uncover your own personal hidden network — spend an hour spying on your friends’ LinkedIn and Facebook connections, and you might be surprised to discover who knows whom. (Remember, your pals don’t need to be acquainted with the decision maker — they just need to get you one step closer.)

Remembering Mike Starr–Alice In Chains

Print Print this page.

mstarrLeading up to the second anniversary of late Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr‘s death, friends and family in the Seattle area are banding together to stage a memorial show to celebrate his life and legacy.

Starr’s sister Melinda, along with several fans and friends, spearheaded the effort to put together a show where everyone can celebrate the bassist’s work through never-before-seen pictures, memorabilia and music performances. The event will take place at Seattle’s Studio Seven this Thursday night (March 7).

On March 8, 2011, shockwaves were sent through the music industry when news broke of former Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr’s passing. Like his bandmate Layne Staley before him, Starr’s demons would eventually become his undoing. His battle with substance abuse was put front and center on the VH1 show ‘Celebrity Rehab,’ which left many fans and friends hopeful that he would turn his life around. Unfortunately his story ended like so many other tragedies when Starr passed away at the age of 44.

Plans for New Supergroup

mccreadyPearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready has teamed up with ex-Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan, and ex-Screaming Trees drummer (and fellow Mad Season member) Barrett Martin for a brand new side-project McCready tells Billboard.

“Duff and Barrett and I got together. We wrote some new stuff and we took some of those old Mad Season demos from that [unreleased] second ‘Disinformation’ record, so we are trying to find something to do with those,” McCready says. “We’re talking to Jaz from Killing Joke and I’ve been trying to find some singers to work on some of that stuff.”

The ever busy guitarist, who is prepping the expanded reissue of Mad Season’s 1995 album “Above” for April — which will featured other, newly finished tunes from that era — and who is also about to head back into the studio to work on Pearl Jam’s next album, says he hopes to release songs by the as-yet-untitled group with McKagan and Martin on his own new label, Hockeytalkter Records.

armstrongrehabIn an exclusive interview in the upcoming issue of Rolling Stone, Billie Joe Armstrong opens up about his years of alcohol and prescription drug abuse and his road back from his onstage meltdown at the iHeartRadio festival in Las Vegas last September.

“I’d wake up in a strange house on a couch. I wouldn’t remember how. It was a complete blackout.” says Armstrong. He finally confronted his problem after the Vegas radio festival, where the frontman smashed his guitar onstage and shouted obscenities.

“I remember tiny things,” Armstrong says of the Vegas incident. “The next morning, I woke up. I asked [my wife] Adrienne, ‘How bad was it?’ She said, ‘It’s bad.’ I called my manager. He said, ‘You’re getting on a plane, going back to Oakland and going into rehab immediately.’”
