50,000 Bee Buzz

Print Print this page.

Not many bees were harmed in this video. In fact, 95% of the 50,000 or so bees survived, thanks to Larry Chen.

Rather than wipe out the colony, Chen decided to call a specialist who would simply relocate the bees. Watch the fascinating bee rescue HERE.

The removal process at Chen’s home took five hours. Mike,   ’The Bee Guy’, was stung four times. Chen was stung once.

Earth From Space

The International Space Station orbits Earth at an average altitude of about 250 miles and travels at around 17,500 miles per hour. It makes roughly 16 trips around the planet every day.

Tomislav Safundžić, resident of Earth, is an 18-year-old who enjoys photography and video editing. He composed “This is Our Planet” with photos and video from the Image Science and Analysis Laboratory at the NASA-Johnson Space Center.

Edited to “Intro” by The XX, the video offers a spectacular view of the home planet, aurorae, stars, and even parts of the ISS.

Soul for Sale

Print Print this page.

In a sad plea for help, a New Mexico woman put her SOUL up for sale on eBay this week. Starting bid? $2,000.

After a devastating car accident in 2007, Lori N. has endured severe pain and multiple serious injuries.

“I’m at the point now, I’m tired,” Lori said. “I don’t feel good. I’m near the end of my rope. I really am.”

From eBay:

We don’t allow humans, the human body, or any human body parts or products to be listed on eBay, with two exceptions. Sellers can list items containing human scalp hair, and skulls and skeletons intended for medical use.

The listing has been removed from eBay. Let’s hope Lori gets the help she needs.

Extreme Zipline Over Nepal

Print Print this page.

Would you do this? Or should I say, could you do this? Could you do it sober? ZipFlyer Nepal has created the world’s most extreme zipline adventure.

Climbing the Himalayas is widely considered to be one of the toughest tests of a mountaineer’s strength and endurance. Coming down the Himalayas via the ZipFlyer is also a test of nerves.

The ZipFlyer Nepal takes thrill-seekers over dense forest at speeds of up to 100mph from a platform overlooking the Himalayas.

The slide, built at Sarangkot, near the Nepalese city of Pokhara, has a vertical drop of almost 2,000 feet and covers a distance of 1.8 kilometers (that’s a little over one mile to you and me).

The trip down the mountain takes about one minute, with a magnetic brake bringing the pulley to a complete stop at the end of the run.

How important is this to you and me? Not very. How COOL is this? Extremely! Watching the video counts as a mark toward your education in physics, just in case you need to justify the time you spend watching.

This guy catches a golf ball initially driven at 180 m.p.h. WHILE driving a car.

In order to get extra credit in your physics education, watch the second video about how it was achieved.

Preserved Puss Piloted Successfully

Quick! To the Orvillecopter! We all mourn and honor our deceased loved ones in different ways. Creating a taxidermied aircraft is not one of the first things I would have done with my dead cat.

The cat helicopter was conceived by Dutch artist Bart Jansen, and debuted for the public at the KunstRai ArtFair in Amsterdam that ended Sunday. Jansen calls his creation the Orvillecopter and describes it as “half-cat, half-machine.”

The Orvillecopter is exactly what it looks like: A taxidermied cat with a plastic propeller attached to each paw. No animals were harmed for this project. The cat, who was conveniently named Orville, belonged to Jansen and died after he was hit by a car.

The artist says he did observe a period of mourning before turning his dead cat into a flying machine, but he clearly thinks he’s done Orville a favor by giving him flight after death.

“Now he is flying with the birds,” he writes. “The greatest goal a cat could ever reach!”

I hope the tail doesn’t break off if he crashes.

I sure hope his electronics are the utmost state of the art. An upgrade means additional self mutilation.

A Message from Henry Rollins

Print Print this page.

Henry Rollins has been someone I’ve admired for decades.

This video struck a chord with me, and I hope you dig it as much as I did. It’s hardly classic “Rollins”: If you’re expecting fire and brimstone from the former Black Flag singer, you will not get it here (this time at least). In fact, it’s striking to me how low-key he sounds; his voice even sounds tired at times.

And why not?  These are, after all, trying and even tiring times.

Despite the uncertain, unfortunate economy, and even outright unfair money troubles some of us face, life in the 21st century in America, vis-a-vis much of the world, and certainly when compared to the rest of human history, is pretty damn good.  From the looks of many among us, though, you might not always get that feeling.

Instead, it seems that many have decided that life is impossible, that the future is bleak, dark, hopeless.

Sorry, that view is not ours here at Q101.  It certainly is not mine.  It doesn’t seem to be Henry’s.

We’re looking for those who see light in darkness, hear music amidst clutter, envision trees where only weeds thrive in cracked, dry ground.

We know we’re not alone, but the voices of despair and anger seem so loud at times.  They beat back honest discussion.  They drown out those who want to have their voice heard.

They can’t be allowed to win.  Will you join the fight?

Welcome, then, to the community of Q101.  It’s a big tent.  Positive thinkers are who we seek.  Difference makers.

If you’re into what we’re trying to build here, we welcome you. If you’re taking a look but haven’t decided yet, welcome as well. If you have some ideas and want to take part, we enjoy lively, colorful, and constructive interaction and welcome you!

If you are not a fan, we understand.  Please be on your way. “Unlike,” “Delete,” do whatever you must to expunge us from your life’s radar screen, and please be well in your life’s journey.

But above all, please find that which will bring you happiness.  If it isn’t us, or this, then so be it.  Be well in your travels, and godspeed!  For, as Henry knows and explains below…the ride we’re all on is short. Enjoy it, or disembark and let the rest of us enjoy it.  Whatever choice you make, just know that it’ll be over all too soon.  What do you choose?

-Mike
