In anticipation of their upcoming Spring tour with Blondefire and Mother Mother, AWOLNATION have released a tour sampler featuring the song “All I Need” as well as tracks from Blondefire and Mother Mother. The sampler can be downloaded for free here: http://redbullrecords.com/springtour2013/.
There doesn’t appear to be a Chicago date in the mix, so Punkmetalmamma may have to take a road trip to Grand Rapids in a couple of weeks.

In case you’d forgotten, Smash Mouth was the band that gave us the annoyingly addictive pop tunes 1997’s ‘Walkin On The Sun’ and 1999’s ‘Allstar’. Both did well hitting the UK singles charts at 19 and 24 respectively. Steve Harwell’s outfit succeeded in pummeling us with cute power pop melody and succinctly left field songs borne out of their Ska punk background.
Produced by Mike Krompass who also handles Nelly Furtado, ‘Magic’ will doubtless attract new admirers as well as pleasing established fans. Upbeat pop gems like opener ‘Perfect Planet’, the bluesy ‘Live To Love Another Day’ or the tongue in cheek bittersweet ‘Future X Wife’ are accessible without being derivative, whilst the humorous ‘Justin Bieber’-a look at things that went out of fashion-or the down tempo harmony soaked ‘Better With Time’ are of a high enough quality to suggest that Smash Mouth isn’t simply going through the motions.

Middle Class Rut are putting the finishing touches on their highly anticipated new album, Pick Up Your Head (Bright Antenna Records), mixed by Grammy winning producer Dave Sardy (Johnny Cash, LCD Soundsystem, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds).
Set for a May 21st release, Pick Up Your Head is the follow-up to 2010’s No Name No Color, which featured the hit single “New Low,” which shot to No. 5 at alternative radio, and whose companion video amassed more than 4 million YouTube views.
The band is raising the bar with Pick Up Your Head, an album Zack Lopez says is “an evolution of a lot of ideas we had as the writing for No Name No Color was winding down. I think we exhausted what we could do in the confines of just drums/guitars/vocals. Once we embraced the idea that anything goes, the songs poured out.”

Chris Taylor Brown knows how to write adrenaline pumping songs. He knows how to incorporate a melodic hook along with amped-up guitars that ends up being the trademark Trapt sound. On Reborn Chris Taylor Brown’s vocals have been recorded differently than they have been in the past. It might be his voice naturally evolving or it could be an effort to make things sound more organic in the mixing process. Brown and the rest of the band reflect their live sound on this record more than previous albums too.

Avenged Sevenfold says that they plan to enter the studio next month to begin recording the follow-up to 2010′s Nightmare.
“This album’s a little more groove orientated,” frontman M. Shadows told NME. “There’s a little bit more groove to it, a little bit more focused on bigger riffs. So that’s where it’s headed – every song has gotta have a huge riff and every song has to have a groove to it.”

Serj Tankian has announced that he has written the full musical score for the upcoming video game Morning Star. Industrial Toys, the studio producing the game, is set to release Morning Star in Spring of 2013, initially for iOS devices.
“I’m really enjoying working on Morning Star because it gives me the ability to create new musical worlds to complement the new visual worlds in the game,” explains Tankian. “Though most of the gameplay will be action oriented cues, the stunning artwork and static scenes have inspired unique sounds unheard before.”
