BREAKING NEWS: CHICAGO EXPRESS FOLDS AFTER JUST ONE SEASON

Print Print this page.

Today shock waves were sent through the East Coast Hockey League as well as the Chicago hockey scene when the Express announced earlier today out of nowhere that they are folding after just one season of play. Although the 2011-2012 ECHL season was their only season of play, the Express first came into inception back in 2009.

The team name was derived from Chicago’s status as a major transportation hub for both business and commercial purposes. The team name was voted for by the fans as part of a campaign by team Owner Craig Drecktrah. The Express played it’s home games at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates. They are the second pro hockey team that has played in that building.

The Chicago Hounds of the United Hockey League played at the Sears Centre from 2006-2009, they would eventually go out of business as well. The hockey team from Robert Morris University also calls the Sears Centre home. As a member of the ECHL, the Express had ties to both the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League. The Express’ NHL affiliate was the Columbus Blue Jackets, their AHL affiliate was the Springfield Falcons.

The Express in their only season of play struggled at the beginning of the season, but pulled it together in the 2nd half and almost made the playoffs. But they fell apart during the final two weeks of the season and wound up missing the playoffs. Some of the Express’ players spent time with their respective NHL and AHL franchises at various points during the season.

Now while the ECHL is considered the number three league behind the NHL and AHL, the Express did not live up to that standard. As you have read in past reports right here on Q101.com, I have covered a few express games this past season. And I can tell you first hand that the Express seemed more like a local semi-pro team then a mid-level professional hockey team.

Now while no official reason has been given by Express management for their demise, after covering the team I think I have some pretty good ideas as to why they went under. For starters the Sears Centre holds 9,500 people for hockey. The Express only averaged 2,500 fans per game, the ECHL’s average attendance for the 2011-2012 season was 4,280 per game. Some nights the Express barely had 1,000 in attendance.

Another reason is the location of their venue. Hoffman Estates is located on the border of Northeast Kane County and Northwest Cook County. Now while local attendance was pretty good, the Express had a hard time attracting fans from outside their region. The hardest fans to reach were fans in the heart of the city and areas south of the Eisenhower Expressway.

Even though ticket prices were reasonable, the cost of gas, tollway prices {Depending on where you came from you’d have to take the Jane Addams Tollway I-90.}, and the distance wasn’t worth it to some potential fans. A lack of promotion could also be a valid cause. It amazed me that the Express had so many sponsors despite the lack of advertising. God bless their sales department. But I never saw any commercials on television, didn’t hear any on the radio, and didn’t see any print or internet ad’s either.

And of course a lack of promotion leads to a lack of media coverage. The Express did not have a radio or TV deal to broadcast their games. Instead the Express streamed their games online which didn’t attract many viewers according to my research. During the last game I attended back on March 25th, aside from the Express’ play-by-play man Bob Mills, and the visiting team’s radio commentator, the only other person in the press box was me.

And when I attended their game back on March 17th, again it was the two play-by-play guys and then me. There was also another writer there but I was unsure as to what publication he was with. And it also doesn’t help that Head Coach Steve Martinson didn’t do pre-game interviews or post-game press conferences. I had to beg for the interview that I had with him back on March 17th.

If you put all of that together and combine it with the cost of game day operations, arena rental, player salaries, the salaries of other team employees, travel costs, and other team needs {uniforms, equipment, etc…} perhaps the Express didn’t do too well in the revenue department.

And of course the biggest reason of them all is, how can you compete with the Wolves and the Blackhawks? Both teams have multiple championships between them. The Blackhawks are one of the NHL’s Original Six, and the Wolves have been here for 18 years now. The Wolves weren’t given much of a chance to succeed. But they became successful by winning championships during the 90′s when the Blackhawks struggled.

Cheap ticket prices and their “family friendly” game experience also paid dividends for them as well. Again this is all just pure speculation on my part. But when Express Media Relations Director Bob Mills said earlier today that “The organization would make no further comment on its disbanding.” All we can do is assume and guess.

Express Owner Craig Drecktrah also released a statement as well:

”The Chicago Express have announced today that they are withdrawing from the ECHL, effectively ending the Chicago Express organization immediately. Although the Chicago Express are ceasing operations, on behalf of the staff and players, I would like to extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation for all the support we received from the Village of Hoffman Estates, Global Spectrum, our business and community partners, our corporate sponsors, and especially, our fans. I would also like to thank our ECHL partners, and wish good luck to those teams participating in the 2012 Kelly Cup Playoffs.”

The team also says that they will be refunding money to people who bought advance playoff tickets. They also advise that fans have until June 1st to redeem their vouchers for Chicago Express youth hockey jerseys. They can redeem those vouchers at the Sears Centre box office. The Express finished the 2011-2012 season with a record of 34-26-8-4 for 80 points.

Now that the Sears Centre has lost a major tenant, how will this impact the arena economically? Will the ECHL try to bring another team to Chicago? And if so will they put them in the Sears Centre? Will the Central Hockey League try to expand into the Chicago market? Only time will tell. But I can say this, unless something happens soon the Sears Centre will be very lonely come this fall.

Q101 SPORTS WRAP 3-19-12

Well the big story of the night is our beloved Chicago Bulls. They soundly defeated the Orlando Magic on their home turf by a final score of 85-59. Although Magic Center Dwight Howard still had a double-double, the Bulls were able to keep his numbers low with just 12 points and 18 rebounds. The Bulls defense was just overwhelming tonight.

The rest of Orlando’s starters only scored a total of 27 points, while Orlando’s bench players {which include former Bulls Guard Chris Duhon} only scored a combined 13 points. I wonder if “Superman” regrets not getting traded after this loss. The Bulls have now won 4 in a row without both Derrick Rose and Richard Hamilton.

Rose is still day to day with a pulled groin, and Hamilton is still day to day with that separated shoulder. There is no timetable set for their returns, but with back to back games against the Toronto Raptors coming up, the Bulls are in no rush to bring them back unless they are %100. Plus the Bulls have proven they can win without them.

Even more good news for the Bulls is that tonight’s victory has given Head Coach Tom Thibideau his 100th career victory as a head coach. He is also the fastest coach to accomplish this feat. I see red and perhaps a championship.

After all, they did embarrass the Miami Heat last week. We got a lot of hockey news to cover. The Blackhawks ride a 3 game winning streak into Columbus tomorrow night to take on the division rival Blue Jackets. Johnathan Toews and Niklas Hjalmarsson are still questionable, but the Blackhawks are confident that they can beat Columbus without them.

After defeating Lake Erie and Toronto over the weekend, the Wolves are off for the next couple of days before finishing their three game road trip against believe or not, Lake Erie. The Wolves are 7-1 during the month of March and because of their amazing play they have moved up to 3rd in the AHL’s Western Conference playoff picture.

The Wolves are still a ways away from clinching a playoff spot, but they are on the right track. And there is the Chicago Express. Of course as I reported on Sautrday night, their 4 game winning streak was broken by the Trenton Titans. Well the Express had a rematch with the Titans on Sunday night. However instead of starting a new winning streak, their losing streak is now 2 in a row.

They lost once again to the Titans 5-4 in overtime. The Express are now finished with non-division games and will only play division games for the remainder of the season. But all hope is not lost, thanks to the Cincinnati Cyclones losing 2 in a row of their own over the weekend the Express managed to gain a point. And because of that point they are now tied with Cincinnati for the final playoff spot in the ECHL’s Eastern Conference.

The Express are off tomorrow but will go head to head with Cincinnati on Wednesday. The Express have a chance to take that #8 spot, and have their own destiny in their hands. After Wednesday, they play a home-and-home series with the Kalamazoo Wings on Friday and Saturday. And then on Sunday afternoon the Toledo Walleye come calling to the Sears Centre, face off is at 4pm.

And I will be in the press box for that contest so keep your browser locked on Q101.com for my live reports. In college hoops, the DePaul Lady Blue Demons fell to the mighty Tennessee Lady Volunteers 63-48. Their hopes of finally reaching the lady’s Sweet 16 were dashed on their home court at Allstate Arena. Pat Summit proves to be the better coach once again.

On the men’s side, Illinois State had a date on the west coast with Stanford in the 2nd round of the 2012 NIT.  But it would wind up being the last game of the season for ISU as they fell 92-88 in Palo Alto. Despite having three players scoring 20 points in the game, the Redbirds just did not have enough firepower to keep up with the Cardinal. But the Redbird nation does have something to look forward to for next season.

In soccer, the Chicago Fire will have most of the week off before facing Philadelphia on Saturday. The Fire just came off a 1-1 tie with Montreal in their 2012 regular season opener over the weekend. The Fire hope to gain their first victory of the 2012 season this weekend.

The only big NFL story of the day is that former Colts Quarterback Peyton Manning has signed with the Denver Broncos. And as a result, the Broncos are looking to trade Tim Tebow. Despite the progress Tebow has made, Broncos Vice President John Elway felt that the Broncos needed a veteran signal caller now instead of building for the future.

And with that in mind the Broncos offered Manning a contract reportedly worth $95 million. Hopefully the Broncos have made the right decision.

As for Arena Football, the Rush continue to practice in preparation for game #2 on the 2012 season. The Orlando Predators fly into Allstate Arena on Thursday night with kickoff at 7:30pm. Rush Quarterback Russ Michna and Linebacker Kelvin Morris won player of the week awards last week, both men are looking to add to their accolades.

And with the AFL’s labor dispute now in the past, the Rush will no longer have distractions and can focus on football. I will be covering the Rush game this Thursday night, so keep it here on Q101 for my reports from Allstate Arena. As for the other indoor football team in town, the Chicago Slaughter will take their 1-2 record into Cedar Rapids on Friday night.

And finally, in Spring Training the Cubs beat Seattle 12-7 and the White Sox lose to Cincinnati 1-0 in the Cactus League. If you plan on attending the Rush game on Thursday and/or the Express game on Sunday. Don’t be afraid to say hi if you see me making my way through the arenas.

THE EXPRESS CONTINUE TO FIGHT FOR THEIR PLAYOFF LIVES

Print Print this page.

Heading into last night’s game with the Trenton Titans, the Chicago Express were riding a 4 game winning streak. They were only 1 point behind the Cincinnati Cyclones for the 8th and final playoff spot in the East Coast Hockey League’s Eastern Conference. To make things even more exciting, Cincinnati lost their game earlier in the day. All the Express needed to do was win to be tied for 8th. However that did not happen. Inability to score on offense, miscommunication on defense, bad penalties, and losing the time of possession battle and was the downfall of the Express.

While they don’t lose ground against Cincinnati, they are still in the 9th spot on the outside looking in. The Express are hoping for redemption in a rematch with Trenton later today. Hopefully the Express can get back on the winning track.

Here is the box score from last night’s game:

Gabe Salgado reporting from the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates:

Also, as the 3rd hockey team in the Chicago area, the Express remain largely unknown. They are currently 9th in the ECHL’s Eastern Conference standings, they are just one point behind the Cincinnati Cyclones for the 8th and final playoff spot in the ECHL East. They also sit third in the ECHL’s North Division behind Cincinnati and the Kalamazoo Wings. Should the Express win tonight, a Cincinnati loss ties them for 8th. The Express are coached by Steve Martinson.

And they are led on the ice by Forward Pierre-Luc Faubert who hopes to play in either the AHL or NHL someday.  He leads all Express goal scorers with 63. The Chicago Express are the ECHL affiliate for the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets. Currently the Express alternate at the goalie position between Rob Madore and Brooks Ostergard as the goalies that started at the beginning of the season are making their way through the AHL and NHL respectively.

Madore will start in goal tonight for the Express. He is 3-1 with a 2.00 GAA and a save percentage of %0.938. It amazes me that a young upbeat team like this hasn’t gotten enough media attention. They struggled at the beginning of the season but they started to pick things up in January. The Express have gone 5-2 in their last 7 games and this recent surge is the reason why they are back in the playoff hunt. Of course I will be here at the Sears Centre throughout the night.

I will post on Q101.com as much as possible during the game, and will post videos during the intermissions.  I will also have my final reports after the game. As always you can follow me on Twitter: @GabeSalgado82 Hashtag: #Q101Sports
