Career Success Hinges Upon This Trait

Print Print this page.

violetThe real secret to success is one that folks rarely talk about, either because they don’t think they have to point it out or because they don’t realize that it’s the first real step.

The first thing to worry about, the thing that matters most first, before all others? Your confidence.

If you’re not confident, “networking” and “baby steps” won’t take you very far. You’ll go to events and flail about. As you interact with people, you’ll convey your own self-doubt. Your words may say one thing, but your body language will say, “I don’t believe in myself, and neither should you.”

Some people feel ineffective doing what they need to do to succeed. They’ll attend networking events without much success, but they should keep going. “Just get yourself out there,” they say. “The more people you meet, the more comfortable you’ll feel.”

What can YOU do to build up your self confidence? READ HERE.

Comic Julia Child

Print Print this page.

julia-child-cookingJulia Child has truly become one of the immortals of American culture. One of my earliest memories in life is that of watching Julia Child’s cooking show while my mother was in the hospital having my brother. My dad and I watched the show where she made some roasted apples, which my Dad called “Baked Tits”. Ah, sweet memories.

Now there’s a new comic book out retelling her life story.

“Female Force: Julia Child” is the latest in a “female empowerment series” of comic books presented by Bluewater Productions, the Vancouver, Wash.-based publisher of comic books, young adult novels and graphic novels.  “Female Force,” a Bluewater press release says, “showcases women that have made a difference in the world.”

Other titles in the “Female Force” series have featured First Lady Michelle Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton,  Martha Stewart, and actors Carrie Fisher and Olivia Newton-John. (????)

It would be really cool to have a Punkmetalmamma comic, but I don’t know if I’ve made that much of a difference in the great big world we live on. What American female would YOU like to see a comic made for?

Montana Zombocolypse

As if the world isn’t already crazy enough, hackers infiltrated the emergency broadcast system of local station KRTV in Great Falls, Montana, a CBS affiliate, and issued a fake zombie alert, the station said on Tuesday.

Viewers were warned of a so-called zombie apocalypse and advised not to tangle with the monstrous creatures, the station said.

Engineers at the station were investigating the incident, which occurred during a Monday afternoon broadcast, said Jon Saunders, vice president of the station’s parent company, Cordillera Communications.

Saunders said early reports suggest similar but separate attacks were launched in the past 24 hours against emergency alert systems for TV stations elsewhere, including Michigan.

“It appears to be more widespread than we thought,” he said.

The hoax caused several humorous-minded residents in Great Falls to call authorities to inquire if guns were an adequate defense against zombie hordes.

Dumb hackers. One of these times, it could be for real and we’ll all be dead. Remember “The Boy Who Cried Wolf?”

Samsung is expected to unveil a smaller, 8-inch-screen tablet next month at the Barcelona Mobile World Congress, according to a report.

The rumored tablet is expected to be called the Galaxy Note 8.0 and rival the iPad mini, Nexus 7 and the 7-inch Amazon Kindle Fire HD.

Because the tablet will be a part of the Galaxy Note line, it’ll feature Samsung’s S-Pen stylus.

The SamMobile report doesn’t include information regarding the tablet’s processor, but it says the device will run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, the latest version of the Google mobile operating system.

Facebook: Your Opinion Mattered Not

Print Print this page.

Facebook has made it official: Its users will no longer get a vote in how the giant social network handles their personal information.

And the votes that they did cast over the past week rejecting Facebook’s proposed changes to privacy policies will not count. Facebook said Tuesday it has already adopted the policy changes.

An external auditor reviewed and confirmed the final results, Facebook said. Nearly 669,000 Facebook users voted, most of them opposed to the policy changes, including taking away their right to vote on policy changes. Yet that was less than 1% of the 1 billion Facebook users around the globe, and Facebook requires 30% of users to cast ballots for the vote to be binding. That means 300 million users would have had to vote.

In comments on Facebook, users didn’t take the news too well.

“Wow, just wow. Don’t ask people to vote, then completely ignore their voices,” wrote Daniel Horton.

Cindy Storm complained that the polls “were hard to locate and rarely worked.”

Others complained that Facebook did not do enough to get out the vote.

But Elliot Schrage, vice president of communications, public policy and marketing, said in a blog post that Facebook made “substantial efforts to inform our users and encourage them to vote, both through emails and their news feeds.”

My question on Facebook privacy? How were the comments (above) from Daniel and Cindy obtained? I’m on Facebook every day and was never clued in there was a vote. Scary…

Been Caught Stealin’

Who says ALL Black Friday shoppers behave badly? Three bystanders helped a crime victim when they chased a parolee accused of snatching a woman’s purse and then trapped him in the back seat of a cab on Michigan Avenue until police arrived.

One of the good Samaritans, Mike Hochhauser, 31, said he didn’t hesitate to chase Richard D. Mendoza, 31, once he stepped out of his building and saw Mendoza stomping on a woman while trying to steal her purse.

“Honestly, I just started running after him, thinking, ‘I’m not going to let this guy get away with this. There’s no way I’m going to let that happen to somebody,’” Hochhauser said.

Mendoza probably would have gotten away if not for the efforts of Hochhauser and the other two people who (do NOT insert Scooby Doo reference here) chased him, said police Officer Patrick Bryant, who helped arrest Mendoza.

Mendoza, of Chicago, was charged with strong-arm robbery and battery, police said. He has 14 prior arrests and four convictions, police said — one for armed robbery, one for strong-arm robbery and two for residential burglaries.

Mendoza is on parole and was wearing an electronic ankle bracelet when he was arrested, police said.

The victim was treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and released.

Drunk Schoolbus Driver

Print Print this page.

Four kids on Chicago’s North Side got to experience a real life episode of COPS this week. Their school bus driver, who was taking them to a public elementary school, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after being stopped for erratic driving, officials said Wednesday.

Once the bus driver finally pulled over, the officer smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath and noticed his eyes were bloodshot.

Kenny Sellers, of Chicago, failed a field sobriety test but refused to take a breath test. Taken to the 17th District police station, Sellers tried to escape and fought with a police officer. Sellers received seven citations, including a felony count of aggravated DUI for a bus driver and aggravated battery against a police officer.

Thankfully, the kids were okay and were transported to school by another bus driver.

Stabbin’ at Chuckie’s

Print Print this page.

This was no ordinary peeved waiter. Last week,  an employee at a Chicago Chuck E. Cheese stands accused of  allegedly stabbing a difficult diner’s companion with a box cutter.

The Sept. 30 incident at the Southwest Side restaurant arcade reportedly began with a confrontation over a salad plate. According to CBS, police said 19-year-old employee Shardonnae Pruitt took a 40-year-old man’s plate away, and he responded by throwing his utensils on the floor and insisting on seeing a manager to make a formal complaint.

After her manager left, Pruitt allegedly threatened the offended diner and stabbed the 25-year-old woman with him, according to the Chicago Tribune. The woman was taken to a hospital and released.

Paying for Facebook

Print Print this page.

They said it would never happen. Pay for Facebook? But nobody said you couldn’t, if you wanted to. Facebook Inc. is letting users in the United States pay a fee to boost the visibility of their postings on the social network, the company’s latest effort to look beyond advertisers for revenue.

The promoted-posts-for-users feature, which Facebook began offering as a test on Wednesday to a limited number of its U.S. users, ensures that a comment or photo shared by a Facebook member gets prominent billing in their friends’ newsfeeds.

The paid postings will be visible on the desktop and mobile versions of the social network. Facebook will place the paid-for postings towards the top of people’s newsfeeds for a limited period of time. Facebook’s newsfeed typically displays content by freshness and relevance.

How much would you pay to be certain your posts are being viewed by your friends? The current test price in the United States is $7, according to a Facebook spokesman. Maybe it’s worth it for everyone to be certain to see your latest post of the family mutt hugging the family cat while in peaceful slumber. Wouldn’t want to miss that.
