Q101 SPORTS WRAP 3-19-12

Print Print this page.

Well the big story of the night is our beloved Chicago Bulls. They soundly defeated the Orlando Magic on their home turf by a final score of 85-59. Although Magic Center Dwight Howard still had a double-double, the Bulls were able to keep his numbers low with just 12 points and 18 rebounds. The Bulls defense was just overwhelming tonight.

The rest of Orlando’s starters only scored a total of 27 points, while Orlando’s bench players {which include former Bulls Guard Chris Duhon} only scored a combined 13 points. I wonder if “Superman” regrets not getting traded after this loss. The Bulls have now won 4 in a row without both Derrick Rose and Richard Hamilton.

Rose is still day to day with a pulled groin, and Hamilton is still day to day with that separated shoulder. There is no timetable set for their returns, but with back to back games against the Toronto Raptors coming up, the Bulls are in no rush to bring them back unless they are %100. Plus the Bulls have proven they can win without them.

Even more good news for the Bulls is that tonight’s victory has given Head Coach Tom Thibideau his 100th career victory as a head coach. He is also the fastest coach to accomplish this feat. I see red and perhaps a championship.

After all, they did embarrass the Miami Heat last week. We got a lot of hockey news to cover. The Blackhawks ride a 3 game winning streak into Columbus tomorrow night to take on the division rival Blue Jackets. Johnathan Toews and Niklas Hjalmarsson are still questionable, but the Blackhawks are confident that they can beat Columbus without them.

After defeating Lake Erie and Toronto over the weekend, the Wolves are off for the next couple of days before finishing their three game road trip against believe or not, Lake Erie. The Wolves are 7-1 during the month of March and because of their amazing play they have moved up to 3rd in the AHL’s Western Conference playoff picture.

The Wolves are still a ways away from clinching a playoff spot, but they are on the right track. And there is the Chicago Express. Of course as I reported on Sautrday night, their 4 game winning streak was broken by the Trenton Titans. Well the Express had a rematch with the Titans on Sunday night. However instead of starting a new winning streak, their losing streak is now 2 in a row.

They lost once again to the Titans 5-4 in overtime. The Express are now finished with non-division games and will only play division games for the remainder of the season. But all hope is not lost, thanks to the Cincinnati Cyclones losing 2 in a row of their own over the weekend the Express managed to gain a point. And because of that point they are now tied with Cincinnati for the final playoff spot in the ECHL’s Eastern Conference.

The Express are off tomorrow but will go head to head with Cincinnati on Wednesday. The Express have a chance to take that #8 spot, and have their own destiny in their hands. After Wednesday, they play a home-and-home series with the Kalamazoo Wings on Friday and Saturday. And then on Sunday afternoon the Toledo Walleye come calling to the Sears Centre, face off is at 4pm.

And I will be in the press box for that contest so keep your browser locked on Q101.com for my live reports. In college hoops, the DePaul Lady Blue Demons fell to the mighty Tennessee Lady Volunteers 63-48. Their hopes of finally reaching the lady’s Sweet 16 were dashed on their home court at Allstate Arena. Pat Summit proves to be the better coach once again.

On the men’s side, Illinois State had a date on the west coast with Stanford in the 2nd round of the 2012 NIT.  But it would wind up being the last game of the season for ISU as they fell 92-88 in Palo Alto. Despite having three players scoring 20 points in the game, the Redbirds just did not have enough firepower to keep up with the Cardinal. But the Redbird nation does have something to look forward to for next season.

In soccer, the Chicago Fire will have most of the week off before facing Philadelphia on Saturday. The Fire just came off a 1-1 tie with Montreal in their 2012 regular season opener over the weekend. The Fire hope to gain their first victory of the 2012 season this weekend.

The only big NFL story of the day is that former Colts Quarterback Peyton Manning has signed with the Denver Broncos. And as a result, the Broncos are looking to trade Tim Tebow. Despite the progress Tebow has made, Broncos Vice President John Elway felt that the Broncos needed a veteran signal caller now instead of building for the future.

And with that in mind the Broncos offered Manning a contract reportedly worth $95 million. Hopefully the Broncos have made the right decision.

As for Arena Football, the Rush continue to practice in preparation for game #2 on the 2012 season. The Orlando Predators fly into Allstate Arena on Thursday night with kickoff at 7:30pm. Rush Quarterback Russ Michna and Linebacker Kelvin Morris won player of the week awards last week, both men are looking to add to their accolades.

And with the AFL’s labor dispute now in the past, the Rush will no longer have distractions and can focus on football. I will be covering the Rush game this Thursday night, so keep it here on Q101 for my reports from Allstate Arena. As for the other indoor football team in town, the Chicago Slaughter will take their 1-2 record into Cedar Rapids on Friday night.

And finally, in Spring Training the Cubs beat Seattle 12-7 and the White Sox lose to Cincinnati 1-0 in the Cactus League. If you plan on attending the Rush game on Thursday and/or the Express game on Sunday. Don’t be afraid to say hi if you see me making my way through the arenas.

Q101 SPORTS WRAP 3-14-12

Print Print this page.

Well the first big story of the night is that the Bulls get revenge on the “Big 3″ and the Miami Heat. The Bulls win at the United Center by a final score of 106-102. The Bulls had led by as much as 12 during the 3rd quarter after great defense and solid bench play. The Heat did try to make a comeback late in the 4th but the Bulls were just too much.

The Bulls dominated from the beginning by outscoring the Heat, protecting the paint, limiting big shots, and most importantly keeping Chris Bosh out of the game. Bosh only scored 12 points and was only able to grab 13 rebounds. Lebron and D-Wade both managed to score 35 and 36 points respectively, but the rest of the team was unable to follow suit.

Starting Center Joel Anthony was scoreless and only snagged 4 boards. And Heat Point Guard Mario Chalmers wasn’t much help either with only 4 points and 3 assists. Miami’s bench was even worse, the Heat only got 13 total points and 13 total rebounds from their bench players. 13 was their unlucky number tonight. And out of the 35 points that King James scored tonight, he only scored 2 of those points in the 4th quarter.

As for the Bulls, they proved that they can win without Derrick Rose in the lineup. D-Rose is day to day with a groin injury which he sustained in Monday night’s game against the New York Knicks. Rip Hamilton is also still on the injured list with a separated shoulder. But it was not a problem as Ronnie Brewer and C.J. Watson stepped up and did a fine job.

But John Lucas III was the star of the show tonight as he scored 24 points off the bench to lead all Bulls scorers. But once again Carlos Boozer was a dissapointment as he finished with just 2 points and 8 rebounds. The Bulls are off on Thursday but the Portland Trail Blazers come to the Madhouse on Madison on Friday night.

And speaking of the Bulls, there is a little buzz around the NBA that the Bulls might try to make a trade to bring either Orlando Magic Center Dwight Howard or Los Angeles Lakers Forward/Center Pau Gasol to Chicago. While nothing has been made official, and no offers have been made, both Gasol and Howard could be the players that finally get the Bulls over the championship hump. But we’ll see what happens.

In other basketball news, both Northwestern and Illinois State have won their first round NIT games. Tuesday Night the Wildcats beat Akron at home 76-74. They travel to Seattle on Friday night to take on Washington in the 2nd round. How ironic that the Cardiac Cats return to the state of Washington for the second straight year.

Last year they played Washington State on their home turf when they were eliminated in the NIT Quarterfinals. As for Illinois State, they upset Mississippi in overtime by a score of 96-93. But the challenge only gets tougher for the Red Birds as they must travel to the west coast to take on Stanford in the 2nd round of the NIT on Monday night.

In hockey the Blackhawks return to action on Friday when they take on the Dallas Stars. As for the Wolves, they fell at home to Peoria tonight 3-1. They are off for the next couple of days. As for Chicago’s third hockey team, the Chicago Express successfully defended their home ice as they defeated Wheeling 3-1. And speaking of the Express, I will be reporting live from the Sears Centre on Saturday night as the Express play host to the Trenton Titans.

Both the Cubs and White Sox continue spring training in the Cactus League. And finally, an update on the Brandon Marshall saga. Of course after the Bears announced the trade for embattled wide receiver on Tuesday, word came very early Wednesday morning that Marshall could be in some legal trouble in New York.

Here is my report on that story: http://q101.com/2012/03/breaking-news-brandon-marshall-could-be-in-legal-trouble/

Of course after this new revelation came to light, Bears General Manager Phil Emery released a statement about the issue. On Wednesday Emery said:   “Both the Bears and Dolphins were aware of what occurred over the weekend. We decided to move forward with the trade. We have high expectations for Brandon as a Bear. Personally, I would caution against rushing to judgment before all the facts come out.”

The rest of the Bears organization has yet to comment on the issue. Bears players however have gone public with their feelings on the issue. Bears Quarterback Jay Cutler told ESPN: ”I talked to Brandon yesterday, and I think he was bummed about it, the perception and everything, of him getting to Chicago and that being over his head, Let’s not judge him quite yet.”

Cutler also said: ”I know he has a checkered past and Brandon is the first one to stand up and admit to that. But I know deep down he’s a good guy. He made some mistakes, but going forward I see nothing but bright things for the guy.” As we all know Cutler was teammates with Marshall in Denver from 2006-2008 and was the big reason why the trade was made with Miami.

And as always we will keep you informed as this story continues to develop. In other Bears news, Tight End Kellen Davis signs a new 2 year contract. The Bears also add another receiver by bringing in Eric Weems and giving him a 3 year deal. Last year Weems played for Atlanta where we was primarily a special teams player. The Bears hope to use Weems on kick returns.

The Bears also met with former Raiders Running Back Michael Bush. Not sure how Matt Forte, Marion Barber, and Kahlil Bell feel about that. And they also met with former Vikings Offensive Lineman Anthony Herrera. The Bears are also hoping they can still pull free agent Defensive End Mario Williams away from signing with the Buffalo Bills.

Local H Gets “Close” To The Crowd @ The Montrose Room

Print Print this page.

Q101 and Local 101 came back to The Montrose Room this last Friday night, and we brought 2 Chicago bands with us, Stoop Goodnoise, and Local H. The doors opened at 8pm, and by the time yours truly spoke to the crowd for a few minutes, you coul hear the glasses clinking and see the beer flowing mixing with the chatter of an audience waiting for the music to start.

Stoop Goodnoise opened the show with their eclectic mix of punk and solid rock guitar. These guys are no strangers to us, with their single from their self-titled release in 2010 “First Names” getting airplay on Local 101. Adrian, Luis, Bella, and David hammered their set out with cohesion, smiles, and an air that was contagious to those within earshot. I spoke with Adrian on and off throughout the evening, and they take a lot of pride in what they do, and they certainly should.

These boys are ones to keep an eye on, and should be listened to on a regular basis. You can take the opportunity to do so, with their freshly out in the wild album, “Crash Me, Cloud” that was dropped onto us January 28th, which you can cheerfully pick up here.

After a break, we find ourselves with Chicago music royalty, Local H.

Scott and Brian brought a 90 minute plus set to the ears of all in The Montrose Room, with a few songs from their catalog starting up a small pit to the left of the stage, and culminating in Scott Lucas taking to walk into the middle of the crowd, much to the delight of everyone there.

With 6, and soon to be 7 studio albums in their pocket, Local H runs strong and wild through the world of music, and energetic and positively electric live performances. Long sets, and live creativity is what the creators of songs like “Bound For The Floor”, and albums like “Pack Up The Cats”, and “As Good As Dead” are known for, and did not disappoint. Local H always brings such a good vibe with them, with a feel like you’re going to your buddy’s garage to see those guys that you know play for the neighborhood, yet their neighborhood is much bigger, and their presence can;t be contained in a garage. Keep your eyes peeled for their new album later this year “Hallelujah! I’m A Bum”.

After talking to members of both bands backstage, it’s good to see there’s still that love of the music, and legitimate gratefulness to the fans. We look forward to bringing you more shows like this, more memorable moments you can pass on to those that may not have made it, and more smiles like this from the fans, and the bands that we work with:

Thanks to Local H, Stoop Goodnoise, The Montrose Room, and the fans for making it another awesome Local 101 Show!!

Jim Ryan of ChicagoNow.com has a good review of this show HERE.  Thanks for the plug Jim!

Matt Forte will be a Chicago Bear in 2012.

Print Print this page.

But don’t get too excited just yet. Matt Forte has not signed a new contract with our beloved Bears just yet. New General Manager Phil Emery has decided to use the 2012 franchise tag on Matt Forte for the upcoming season. Should the Bears and Forte not agree on a new contract for the start of the season, he will make $12.7 million via the franchise label. Now what does franchise mean?

It’s not a contract. But what it does mean is that Forte can only leave the Bears if he is traded. Now there are two ways to look at this transaction: 1. The Bears are not committed to a long-term deal to keep Forte in a Bears uniform {Some Bears fans and maybe even Forte himself feels this way. I’m sure Forte’s agent does for sure}. And 2. The Bears are smart by using the franchise tag so other teams can’t sign him.

And I’d have to agree with option number 2. Remember, the Bears did the same thing with Lance Briggs just a few years ago. At first Briggs wasn’t happy about it. But he accepted it, played his ass off, and was eventually awarded with a new contract. Hopefully the same will happen to Matt Forte, or perhaps Phil Emery and President Ted Phllips are using the franchise tag as a smoke screen.

A smoke screen in which they keep Forte on the roster while still working out a contract. It seems like smart business to me, and I hope that one way or another Matt Forte will get a brand new contract to stay with the Bears. He is a major piece to the offensive puzzle, he can easily gain 1’000 yards both receiving and rushing, he is also a key in pass protection.

The Bears can’t afford to lose him. And knowing that, I trust the judgement of the Bears front office to do the right thing in the long run.

On a personal note… Don’t be surprised if you find me at the Chicago Rush’s home opener VS Tampa Bay at Allstate Arena on Saturday. I hope to see you there as well.

1st Local 101 Show of ’12 A Sold Out Party

Print Print this page.

Q101′s first Local 101 show of the year was a great notch on our belts (and yours!)-a sold-out show!  Thanks to all who turned out!  For those who were turned away at the door (and there were quite a few unfortunately), we look forward to seeing you at the show there with Local H March 9!  Don’t wait to get tickets at the door-Click HERE!

The Montrose Room is one of the best-kept secrets in town, though it won’t be for long:  It’s wonderfully intimate and has a very exclusive feel.  It’s a classy place enscounced in the Hotel Intercontinental in Rosemont.  How ritzy is this place?  Well, let’s put it this way: it was a strange scene to witness the intermingling of the Q101 crowd and the stone-faced security minions of the Minister Louis Farrakhan who was staying the night there before his group’s annual convention at the United Center Sunday.  So striking was the contrast between the two factions dominating the premises Saturday night-Q101 and Farrakhan rockin’ the same scene?  Really?- that the steely demeanor and red bow ties favored by the Nation of Islam devotees may be the new required wear for the Q101 staff at future shows!

The openers of the show, Chicago’s Hear You Me did a great job onstage with their own songs, and others like The Who’s “Baba O’Riley”. Thanks to the guys in Hear You Me (Tim, Mike, Stefan, Dave) for performing, and showing what they’ve got!

Next up was the evening’s main event, Lucky Boys Confusion!

These west suburban boys have been around for 15 years, and have left their mark on the landscape with a well-versed discography, and not to mention the “Songs From A Scene” concert series.  They brought the crowd into a fervor with some of their hits like “Atari”, “Hey Driver”, and “Fred Astaire”. It was a great performance, with a set that lasted approximately 80 minutes, going through 15 songs from their library.  Their show even featured a small, but surprisingly fierce pit.

We’re great fans of Lucky Boys Confusion, and we have a very long history with them. It’s always good to see them, hear them, and the way they can get a crowd worked up! Thanks to The Montrose Room, Hear You Me, and Lucky Boys Confusion for helping us bring YOU, the fans, Local 101 as it should be. Fun, exciting, and packed full of people having a great time!

At least one of these guys will be selling their free shirt on Ebay.  Can you guess?  (Bonus points if you guessed “the guy not wearing socks!”  Nice work!)

Groundhog Day Again? I Got You Babe will Never play on Q101…Bill Murray could though

Print Print this page.

Today is Groundhog Day.  It (the holiday) never made any sense to me at all.  I realize it’s not supposed to…it’s tradition after all.  The Greek translation of “tradition” is literally to do shit just cause you’ve always done it…even if it doesn’t make sense.  At least that’s what wikipedia said.

So if this rodent SEES his shadow, cast from the SUN we get MORE Winter?  That doesn’t compute Will Robinson.  But it doesn’t really have to.

Groundhog Day has a new meaning to the folks here at the World Famous Q101.  Groundhog Day is more about the movie with Bill Murray and the message of the movie to “us”.  Every one else in Chicago media is going to yammer on about how parts of the movie were filmed here in Woodstock…yada yada yada.  Their reports are almost identically to the reports they did last year.  Their reports ARE Groundhog DAY!

We have some crackpot theories on life…be warned.  Matt (one of the new co-owners of Q101) believes Dr. Seuss’s book “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” is one of the greatest success manuals of all time and holds some of life’s secrets.

Both owners (Mike & Matt) have a very strong feeling about the movie Groundhog Day and it’s underlying message.  Watch the movie and maybe you’ll see what they see.  You probably won’t.  Let’s face it, these are the same two dudes that tried to get Chicago to band together to buy WLUP and later actually bought Q101 with their own money.  Some think they have a screw loose.

So what’s this mystical insight the Q101 guys have regarding Groundhog Day, the movie you ask?

Here it is…they make us new hires recite it at orientation:

EVERY DAY IS GROUND HOG DAY.

Chew on that.  It means, every day is the same day over and over again.  We’re in a foggy haze all the time and rarely realize how much opportunity is before us.  Every day we have an opportunity to reinvent the day, to change the way we do things, to snap out of it!

If we do nothing, every day will come and go…and we’ll look back and wonder where it went.  If we do the same things over and over, we will get the same results.  Every morning the alarm goes off, we being the same routine, but in real life it’s a new day each time….

It isn’t until Bill Murray figures out how to make the most out of his day for the people around him that he discovers how THAT makes it HIS best day…and he’s free from Groundhog day in perpetuity from that point on.

Every day is ground hog day pal.  As Dr. Suess wrote:

Today is YOUR day…your mountain is waiting…So get on your way!

Rise Against, Friends Rock The Halls, And Rattle Walls

Print Print this page.

The Rise Against/A Day To Remember/The Menzingers show at the UIC Pavilion was a party full of surprises. The venue, the UIC Pavilion , is generally used for the basketball season for their team the UIC Flames. Off-days, and off-season, the venue plays host to various conventions, boxing matches, and concerts like these. Like any basketball arena temporarily converted to a concert venue, the court becomes the “general admission area” where a few thousand people easily can pack themselves against each other over the excitement of seeing a performance by a group that they enjoy.  This show was certainly no different.

The Menzingers were new to me before this show, and I wondered why. They are definitely on my radar now.  The show began with a darken stage and the speech from the movie “Independence Day” that was given by the U.S. President (played by Bill Pullman) to the pilots before their last stand against the aliens.  For some reason I thought this was a cool way to open the night.  The Menzingers are a solid band, with a live sound that gets the crowd moving. Their set lasted around 30 minutes, and I was surprised when it was over; it felt like their show ended too quickly.  I wanted to hear more.

A Day To Remember uses the lights and colors of the stage to influence the mood and emotion of the songs they were performing, along with a smoke machine blowing huge geysers into the air during several of their songs. They really do genuinely seem to appreciate their fans, and audience participation is a big part of their show. This particular show included a bombardment of rolls of toilet paper into the crowd (best usage of tp, I dare say, since “Blue Man Group”), which were mostly thrown about until the rolls were emptied. Their metal/punk musical style is very wide-ranging, going from melodic to screamo at the snap of a finger.  Their music combined with their energetic movement on stage got fists pumping, and a couple of circle pits going at once.  The highlight of their performance saw their vocalist, Jeremy McKinnon, climbing into one of those giant inflatable balls like a hamster. He took a step out off the stage, running over the top of the crowd in the inflatable clear ball with the hands of the people acting as the “floor” he was walking and running on.  ADTR really got the audience going during their 45 minute or so set, and their singer Mckinnon informed the crowd that this was, by far, their biggest indoor show to date, and he let us know how proud he was of that.

During the next intermission, there was a drastic change in the stage. The drum kit was pushed back, and what looked like four large black rectangular blocks were put on stage.  A  grey carpet was rolled out. These 4 large rectangles turned out to be TV screens turned vertically, displaying various images of war before the headliners of the evening, Rise Against, took the stage. Their set did not disappoint. Their performances always have an energy that pulsates through the crowd.  They are masters at bringing the audience along on a roller-coaster ride of emotions.  It’s nothing for RA to have 10,000 people quiet in rapt attention one minute, and then they’ll rip through an anthem that will have thousands singing along in unison the very next minute.

The screens behind them featured scenes of protestors, wars, and teenagers talking to the camera provided the perfect backdrop for their song “Make It Stop (September’s Children)”.  The tune is a hard-hitting and loud stand against homophobia, and it played well to the very retro color schemes illuminating the stage. As a group with intense political and economic views, they convey their beliefs without coming off as overly-preachy, and pull off the feat of doing it while still keeping their catalog well-versed, their sales high, and asses filling seats. Their decade together has produced a total synergy together onstage:  Vocalist Tim McIlrath swung his corded microphone like a helicopter rotor with reckless abandon, and guitarist Zach Blair would duck effortlessly, almost mindlessly, when the microphone would come perilously swinging his way.

Acoustic renditions of “Audience of One”, and “Swing Life Away” were heartfelt and personal, with McIlrath the only one onstage.  Lighters filled the air (people still smoke in large numbers?) and mobile phones glowed throughout the auditorium (that makes much more sense).  Sadly, the night was marred to a degree at night’s end, though, fittingly, it provided RA the chance to demonstrate their principals:  The band put a halt to the show in the middle of their three song encore after someone went down hard in the pit.  The show was stopped to allow the victim to be taken out in a stretcher, with McIlrath saying “We need to see if everyone is OK before going on.”

As if anyone doubts that they are a band of the people.  As usual, Rise Against puts fans first.

2012 Pop Culture Predictions

Print Print this page.

Courtesy of our friends at the Montreal Gazette (Q101 is #1 in Montreal!):

With that dire Mayan doomsday prophecy hanging over the next year, we needed to stare extra-deep into our crystal ball to make predictions on 2012′s world of entertainment.

Knowing Armageddon may be in the cards, many important questions arise, such as: How can the world end before Christopher Nolan completes his Batman trilogy? And how can the world not end when Charlie Sheen premieres his new TV series?

Without further ado, and while the world is still spinning, we offer some pop-culture trends and events to look forward to in 2012.

Who killed Rosie Larsen? Who killed Ned Stark? We’ll finally learn the answer to the former when AMC’s The Killing returns for Season 2 in April. The answer to the second question is author George R.R. Martin, who wrote the series, A Song of Ice and Fire, that gave birth to HBO’s celebrated Game of Thrones. The more important question: Who will Martin kill next (read the books for spoilers) when Game of Thrones returns for Season 2 in March?

New Year’s TV babies: Alcatraz (Jan. 26); The Firm (Jan. 8); The Finder (Jan. 12); Luck (Jan. 29). Winter is the new fall, with a slew of hot shows. These four have the best chances of success. Alcatraz reunites Lost’s J.J. Abrams and Jorge Garcia, who played Hurley on Lost. (I’m quietly hoping the premiere is an alternative, more satisfying version of the Lost finale.) The Firm takes John Grisham’s character Mitch McDeere into the future. Originally played by Tom Cruise in the 1993 film, Josh Lucas’s fine acting chops will offer a less artificial, more nuanced, more credible version of the lawyer. The Finder offers a spinoff of Bones. Meanwhile, Luck tries its luck at doing for horse racing what Boardwalk Empire did for bootlegging. My prediction: Luck star Dustin Hoffman will contend with Steve Buscemi and Jon Hamm for the 2012 best-actor Emmy.

Bad boys: Daniel Craig’s Bond is finally back in Skyfall (Nov. 9), in which 007′s loyalty to M (Judi Dench) is tested. Bond’s even bigger test, and one of our anticipated joys of the film? Javier Bardem as the villain. Meanwhile, Canadian bad boy Kiefer Sutherland – Jack Bauer himself – returns to the small screen in Touch. A preview will air Jan. 25 following American Idol, with the premiere pegged for March 19. Created by Tim Kring (Heroes), the show finds Sutherland playing the father of a mute son with special powers of prediction. (I predict a hit in 2012 – and a few more entertaining “Kiefer walks into a bar …” tabloid stories.)

Mad Men and the Man: With stalled contract negotiations and endless delays, it’s easy to forget that when we last saw Mad Men, it was finishing its best season yet. When the AMC show finally returns with new episodes in March, it will be the pop-cultural TV event of the year. Forget the ad agency – what will come of Don’s hasty marriage to his young secretary (Montreal’s lovely Jessica Paré)? Meanwhile, the Man, Canadian legend Leonard Cohen, releases a new album, Old Ideas, on Jan. 31. At 77, Cohen could still outcharm and out-seduce Don Draper any day of the week.

Caped crusaders: Spider-Man reborn; the Dark Knight hangs up his cape; the Avengers assemble. The Avengers (May 4) will test whether putting an orgy of heroes onscreen at the same time will in any way deter Robert Downey Jr. from stealing scenes. The Amazing Spider-Man (July 3) dumps Tobey Maguire for Andrew Garfield (The Social Network), and Kirsten Dunst for the ever-delightful and intelligent Emma Stone. Last, but not least, Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy ends with The Dark Knight Rises (July 20). As for the next Batman? I hear Tobey Maguire is looking for work.

Two reasons Doomsday may not come soon enough: Paul McCartney’s Valentine’s Day album, and Charlie Sheen’s Anger Management. Sir Paul, who recently remarried, will release an album of love songs on Feb. 7, just in time to make a little mood music for Cupid’s big day. Most of the songs will be romantic standards from the likes of Cole Porter, but the album’s two new songs have cheese ball written all over them: Valentine and Only Our Hearts. And that brings us to Anger Management, Charlie Sheen’s pending comeback slated for a yet-to-beannounced 2012 premiere on the FX network. (CTV bought Canadian distribution rights.) The show will offer a televised take on the mediocre 2003 film starring Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson. That said, I wouldn’t bet against a man fuelled by tiger blood; Charlie could very well be winning again very soon.

Chicago natives and rock superstars Madina Lake rocked Mojoes of Joliet this past Friday. Madina Lake, who is currently on the Wake Up! tour with Me Talk Pretty, delivered a solid-ass show according to eyewitness accounts.  What?  Don’t believe us?  Q101′s pals snuck in some HD Cams to capture some of the sights and sounds of one of Chicago’s brightest bands.  See for yourself:

Q101′s friends at www.HaveYouSceneUs.com also sat down with the night’s headliners, Me Talk Pretty , as well as supporting act Still Standing.  Both interviews will be posted soon on their site. Head over to HaveYouSceneUs to check out the full story and review of the event.  Thanks for the footage guys!

Rolling Stones, Blues, And Missing Teeth

Print Print this page.

Hubert Sumlin was a blues guitarist with Chicago roots, that helped give Howlin’ Wolf his “Wang Dang Doodle”, and set the bar for a lot of musicians that you see and hear today. Passing from heart failure on December 4th, the waves of his death were felt as far as England.

Born in the Mississippi Delta in 1931, and then moved to and raised in Hughes, Arkansas, Sumlin taught himself guitar. When the 1950’s came around, he came to Chicago, and came across a man named Howlin’ Wolf, and began a collaboration of music that shaped many artists, and genres that you hear today.

Even with music that made people stand up and pay attention, there were still issues. Once, in Little Rock, Arkansas, Hubert came to a show after it was already over. Getting in the car as if nothing happened, Wolf and Sumlin got into a tussle, resulting in Wolf tossing Sumlin down a hill, with Sumlin losing 2 of his front teeth. So is the nature of the beast. But, payback was in the forecast for Hubert’s lost teeth.

A Chicago blues club, named Silvios is where it happened, hitting Wolf square in the mouth, knocking some of his teeth out. After what Sumlin said was “feeling really bad about it”, an apology was made, and they both went back to what they did best, and that was music. Sumlin shaped the desires and styles of a lot of musicians, including Keith Richards and Eric Clapton, both of them throwing their hat in the ring to be part of Sumlin’s grammy-nominated 2005 album “About Them Shoes”.

When word came of his passing on December 4th, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones came forward to pay for Hubert Sumlin’s funeral services. December 12th was a public service at Festa Memorial Funeral Home in Totowa, New Jersey. A private service was held on December 13th in Homewood, IL. It was not specified what part, or if all of Sumlin’s services were paid for by Jagger and Richards, but it’s great to think they were only a “stone’s throw” from Q101 fans.

Hubert Sumlin was an amazing man with a guitar in his hands. His skill and style has been adapted and looked up to by many. It’s always a tragedy when we lose someone bearing this importance on the world of music, but you can learn more about his legacy, and spread the word by going Here, and Here
