New Cobain Suicide Scene Photos

Print Print this page.

kurtWe thought for sure that by now, on the 19th anniversary of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain‘s death, every last shred of documentation regarding the iconic rocker’s suicide would have been unearthed. Turns out we were wrong.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the hometown paper of record, sent several photographers to Cobain’s Lake Washington Boulevard mansion on April 8, 1994, the day an electrician discovered the body. Several of the pictures — including a famous front page image showing Cobain’s body from the waist down — appeared in hundreds of papers worldwide the next day, but apparently, there were additional shots not published at the time. They’ve been preserved at Seattle’s Museum of History and Industry, but today, the Post-Intelligencer has finally published them.

Although Cobain’s body itself isn’t pictured, “some of these photos could be disturbing to some readers,” notes the paper. “These are not presented for shock value, but rather as historical images from the P-I archive preserved at [Museum of History and Industry].”

Flashback to 1988 – The Pixies

Print Print this page.

pixAt the time of its release, ‘Surfer Rosa’ was no big deal. The Pixies’ debut album came less than six months after their first EP, ‘Come On Pilgrim,’ which included a handful of songs remixed from their scrappy demo tape. But ‘Come On Pilgrim’ didn’t stir much interest outside of a small college-rock cult audience. So when ‘Surfer Rosa’ hit shelves on March 21, 1988, it wasn’t like tons of fans were waiting for it.

But over the years the album’s rep grew. And grew. And grew. Today, on the 25th anniversary of its release, ‘Surfer Rosa’ is considered an indie rock cornerstone, a masterpiece of the soft-loud-soft dynamic used by everyone from Nirvana to the Smashing Pumpkins to Spoon. It’s an essential record that connects the dots between ‘80s college rock and its evolution toward ‘90s indie.

Morrissey to Retire?

Print Print this page.

morrissey2Morrissey‘s health has been a hot topic as of late, what with all of the scrapped shows, double pneumonia scare and ultimately canceled tour. Now, the singer has revealed that things were even worse than they appeared — and they already looked pretty bad — as he apparently suffered internal bleeding. He’s also said that doctors have urged him to retire in order to preserve his health.

NO WAY.

“It almost became absurd the number of things that happened to me but everything just attacked me at once,” he added. “The double pneumonia – everything was really a result of the fact I had lost so much blood, so the immune defenses were very, very low and couldn’t cope with anything, so therefore the slightest gust of wind and I would have a terrible cold.”

While doctors have suggested that he retire in order to tend to his health and avoid further illnesses, he’s not sold on hanging it up.

“I have been cautioned to, but it’s difficult for me because it’s very ingrained in me,” he said.

Brand SPANKIN’ New Depeche Mode ‘Soothe My Soul’

Print Print this page.

Depeche Mode went with a ballad as the first single off their forthcoming thirteenth studio album, and now they’re showing off a different side of ‘Delta Machine.’ ‘Soothe My Soul,’ the disc’s second single, is decidedly more up-tempo than ‘Heaven,’ with pounding beats, rhythmic pulses and throbbing electronics creating a sinister backdrop for Dave Gahan’s typically foreboding words. It’s awesome, check it OUT:

Stooges – Ready To Die

Print Print this page.

Is Iggy Pop finally ‘Ready to Die?’ That’s the name of the new album from proto-punk legends the Stooges.

A release date for the album has yet to be announced, but the band has finished recording, and the titles of two songs have been revealed: ‘I Got a Job But It Don’t Pay S—’ and ‘Gun.’ Let’s hope ‘Ready to Die’ gets a better reception than ’The Weirdness,’ which, despite being the Stooges’ first studio album in more than three decades, was flogged with near-universal bad reviews.

So THAT’S what he’s gonna be doing while the Foo Fighters take a break.  Dave has returned to Queens of the Stone Age, the alternative band fronted by former Kyuss guitarist Josh Homme that he drummed for in 2002.

This is Grohl’s second stint with Queens of the Stone Age. He played on one album, ‘Songs for the Deaf,’ which is their most commercially successful album to date, having sold close to 1 million copies and spawned two hit singles, ‘No One Knows’ and ‘Go With the Flow.’

Grohl has stated that he remains committed to the Foo Fighters, even though they are currently taking a hiatus of indefinite length.
