David Draiman – Device

Print Print this page.

davidDavid Draiman is gearing up to release the self-titled debut album from his new band Device. In Loudwire’s interview with Draiman, he talks about his approach to making the Device album, given his long history with Disturbed, as well as the wealth of incredible guest appearances he was able to secure for the disc. An excerpt from the interview:

When you first announced the project Device, you mentioned Nine Inch Nails and Ministry as references, and listening to the album, there are definitely industrial elements. But there’s also this sense of familiarity in you vocal delivery that your Disturbed fans are likely to identify with. Was there a conscious effort to offer both the unfamiliar and the familiar?

There was no conscious effort, that’s for certain. My voice is associated with Disturbed — that’s how my voice is branded and when I go into the more staccato, rhythmic delivery, which is just a very comfortable and familiar place, it’s a powerful place for me to go vocally. It’s felt natural since the day I first walked up to the audition that at a time when the rest of the guys were in a band called Brawl and wanted to play cover songs to see if we could break the ice with each other.

I challenged them to play me their originals and they’re like, “What are you going to sing,” and I’m like, “I’ll come up with something,” and what I came up with was, “Your mind won’t let you say that you want me.” And that was the first chorus from ‘Want’ off of ‘The Sickness’ and the band that was Brawl become Disturbed. Back then, I was still feeling out lyrical delivery that was rhythmic in nature that always had a very specific defined cadence to it, that was somewhat rapid fire or staccato in nature. It’s something I’ve been doing for years and it’s something that’s been a part of who I am. It’s become identified with Disturbed because that’s the band I am a part of. I’m the lead singer for that band so people are going to know that.

zcPercussion icon and founder of Sabian Cymbals, Robert Zildjian, has died at the age of 89. The Boston born businessman succumbed after a battle with cancer on March 28, and is survived by his wife, three children and eight grandchildren.

Robert Zildjian formed Sabian cymbals after a family feud resulted in the businessman leaving yet another legendary cymbal company, Zildjian. Family tradition dictated that the secrets of the Zildjian cymbal company would be passed down only to the oldest son, but Avedis Zildjian III offered the sacred information to both Robert and his younger brother Armand, eventually leading to a rift which broke the brothers apart, leaving them as competitors.

A memorial guestbook has been posted on Sabian’s official website, but to due the massive outpouring of mourners, the site’s server has been struggling to keep up, but if you’d like to pay tribute to RZ, be sure to commit your name to the digital guestbook.

Okay Then…Nine Inch Nails and Carley Rae Jepsen?

Print Print this page.

carleyJust like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates, the craze of music mashups tells us you never know what you’re going to get. Sometimes tracks you could never imagine sync up in perfect absurd harmony, and that’s the case with a new mashup from an artist going by the name PomDeter. The mixmaster has decided to take the Nine Inch Nails classic ‘Head Like a Hole’ and put it together with the recent ubiquitous Carly Rae Jepsen hit ‘Call Me Maybe.’

Production-wise, the track dubbed ‘Call Me a Hole’ works surprisingly well, with Trent Reznor‘s angst-ridden lyrics laying perfectly into the Jepsen music bed. But that’s also where things get a little weird. You can feel the emotion of Reznor’s vocal delivery perhaps even more in the song, but it’s hard to get too pulled down into mire of his melancholy with strings so infectiously catchy.

Remembering Mike Starr–Alice In Chains

Print Print this page.

mstarrLeading up to the second anniversary of late Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr‘s death, friends and family in the Seattle area are banding together to stage a memorial show to celebrate his life and legacy.

Starr’s sister Melinda, along with several fans and friends, spearheaded the effort to put together a show where everyone can celebrate the bassist’s work through never-before-seen pictures, memorabilia and music performances. The event will take place at Seattle’s Studio Seven this Thursday night (March 7).

On March 8, 2011, shockwaves were sent through the music industry when news broke of former Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr’s passing. Like his bandmate Layne Staley before him, Starr’s demons would eventually become his undoing. His battle with substance abuse was put front and center on the VH1 show ‘Celebrity Rehab,’ which left many fans and friends hopeful that he would turn his life around. Unfortunately his story ended like so many other tragedies when Starr passed away at the age of 44.
