Lucky Boys Confusion Return To Stage, Honor Late Guitarist

Print Print this page.

After more than a decade of playing for the fans, Kaustubh “Stubhy” Pandav said taking the stage with Lucky Boys Confusion has new meaning since the death of guitarist Joe Sell.

Pandav and Sell, a self-taught guitarist, had been making music together since they formed punk, rock and ska band Lucky Boys Confusion with other local musicians in 1997. Pandav previously had said Sell added “the attitude and swagger” to the band’s music.

The band is scheduled to take the stage at 9 p.m. Saturday at Madison Meadow Park, 600 E. Madison St., Lombard, and has the blessing of Sell’s family. The guitarist’s father, also named Joe, is still struggling with the loss, but he plans to attend the show.

“I’m glad they’re getting back on stage because I think every time they do, the band lives on. And that’s what he was part of for 15 years,” the elder Joe Sell said. “So I’m glad it’s going on and sad it’s going on without him.”

Pandav said performing without Sell on Saturday will be hard but necessary. He also said the band may eventually find a “permanent sub,” but no one will take Sell’s place.

LBC Shock, Sadness: Guitarist Joe Sell, 33, Passes Away

LBC Rocks The Local 101 Show at The Montrose Room in early '12.

Just months ago, Q101 was proud to relaunch Local 101 with a special, intimate performance by Lucky Boys Confusion at The Montrose Room in Rosemont.  For the lucky few who made it into that room that night (many had to be turned away at the door of the venue inside the Hotel Incontinental), it was an amazing, even joyful show with a band in top form.  Sadly, it was the last time most of us got to experience a show with Joe Sell on guitar.  The 33 year old Naperville native passed away Tuesday.  Our hearts and prayers go out to him and his family, both his blood and beloved ones, and his brothers in LBC.  RIP Joe.  Too soon brother.  Too soon.  Safe passage. Read more courtesy of the Daily Herald:

In a way, Lucky Boys Confusion guitarist Joe Sell was a simple man.

He loved reading and relaxing with friends and had an ear for musical tone so strong it was beyond perfect pitch, the band’s lead singer, Stubhy Pandav, said.

Sell, of Naperville, died Tuesday night. He was 33.

“He was brilliant. He was extremely well-read,” Pandav said about his longtime friend and bandmate. “He found happiness in the smallest things, from gummy candy to Harry Potter books. He was a simple man when it came down to that.”

One of his four sisters, 27-year-old Jackie Sell, on Wednesday described her brother as “a total nerd in disguise of this rock star.”

“He was so down-to-earth, you could talk to him about anything,” she said. “He had a thing for the underdog, so he clicked with people who were outcasts.”

Sell had been in the hospital with pancreas problems about two or three months ago, but Pandav did not immediately know what caused the guitarist’s death. Jackie Sell said her brother struggled with addictions over time, but “was trying his hardest” to overcome them.

“We knew that he was sick, but we also saw how much he was getting better,” Pandav said.

As fans of Lucky Boys Confusion posted “rest in peace” messages online, Pandav said Sell should be remembered for his musical talents.

He was one of five members of the punk band that got its start in 1997 playing small gigs near its members’ hometowns of Naperville and Downers Grove before gaining a record deal and national recognition.

Largely self-taught, Sell built on piano skills he practiced growing up and learned to play guitar by attempting songs by favorite bands Guns N’ Roses and Led Zeppelin. At family gatherings, he would lead singalongs and play any song requested on command, his sister said.

1st Local 101 Show of ’12 A Sold Out Party

Print Print this page.

Q101′s first Local 101 show of the year was a great notch on our belts (and yours!)-a sold-out show!  Thanks to all who turned out!  For those who were turned away at the door (and there were quite a few unfortunately), we look forward to seeing you at the show there with Local H March 9!  Don’t wait to get tickets at the door-Click HERE!

The Montrose Room is one of the best-kept secrets in town, though it won’t be for long:  It’s wonderfully intimate and has a very exclusive feel.  It’s a classy place enscounced in the Hotel Intercontinental in Rosemont.  How ritzy is this place?  Well, let’s put it this way: it was a strange scene to witness the intermingling of the Q101 crowd and the stone-faced security minions of the Minister Louis Farrakhan who was staying the night there before his group’s annual convention at the United Center Sunday.  So striking was the contrast between the two factions dominating the premises Saturday night-Q101 and Farrakhan rockin’ the same scene?  Really?- that the steely demeanor and red bow ties favored by the Nation of Islam devotees may be the new required wear for the Q101 staff at future shows!

The openers of the show, Chicago’s Hear You Me did a great job onstage with their own songs, and others like The Who’s “Baba O’Riley”. Thanks to the guys in Hear You Me (Tim, Mike, Stefan, Dave) for performing, and showing what they’ve got!

Next up was the evening’s main event, Lucky Boys Confusion!

These west suburban boys have been around for 15 years, and have left their mark on the landscape with a well-versed discography, and not to mention the “Songs From A Scene” concert series.  They brought the crowd into a fervor with some of their hits like “Atari”, “Hey Driver”, and “Fred Astaire”. It was a great performance, with a set that lasted approximately 80 minutes, going through 15 songs from their library.  Their show even featured a small, but surprisingly fierce pit.

We’re great fans of Lucky Boys Confusion, and we have a very long history with them. It’s always good to see them, hear them, and the way they can get a crowd worked up! Thanks to The Montrose Room, Hear You Me, and Lucky Boys Confusion for helping us bring YOU, the fans, Local 101 as it should be. Fun, exciting, and packed full of people having a great time!

At least one of these guys will be selling their free shirt on Ebay.  Can you guess?  (Bonus points if you guessed “the guy not wearing socks!”  Nice work!)

2012 Pop Culture Predictions

Print Print this page.

Courtesy of our friends at the Montreal Gazette (Q101 is #1 in Montreal!):

With that dire Mayan doomsday prophecy hanging over the next year, we needed to stare extra-deep into our crystal ball to make predictions on 2012′s world of entertainment.

Knowing Armageddon may be in the cards, many important questions arise, such as: How can the world end before Christopher Nolan completes his Batman trilogy? And how can the world not end when Charlie Sheen premieres his new TV series?

Without further ado, and while the world is still spinning, we offer some pop-culture trends and events to look forward to in 2012.

Who killed Rosie Larsen? Who killed Ned Stark? We’ll finally learn the answer to the former when AMC’s The Killing returns for Season 2 in April. The answer to the second question is author George R.R. Martin, who wrote the series, A Song of Ice and Fire, that gave birth to HBO’s celebrated Game of Thrones. The more important question: Who will Martin kill next (read the books for spoilers) when Game of Thrones returns for Season 2 in March?

New Year’s TV babies: Alcatraz (Jan. 26); The Firm (Jan. 8); The Finder (Jan. 12); Luck (Jan. 29). Winter is the new fall, with a slew of hot shows. These four have the best chances of success. Alcatraz reunites Lost’s J.J. Abrams and Jorge Garcia, who played Hurley on Lost. (I’m quietly hoping the premiere is an alternative, more satisfying version of the Lost finale.) The Firm takes John Grisham’s character Mitch McDeere into the future. Originally played by Tom Cruise in the 1993 film, Josh Lucas’s fine acting chops will offer a less artificial, more nuanced, more credible version of the lawyer. The Finder offers a spinoff of Bones. Meanwhile, Luck tries its luck at doing for horse racing what Boardwalk Empire did for bootlegging. My prediction: Luck star Dustin Hoffman will contend with Steve Buscemi and Jon Hamm for the 2012 best-actor Emmy.

Bad boys: Daniel Craig’s Bond is finally back in Skyfall (Nov. 9), in which 007′s loyalty to M (Judi Dench) is tested. Bond’s even bigger test, and one of our anticipated joys of the film? Javier Bardem as the villain. Meanwhile, Canadian bad boy Kiefer Sutherland – Jack Bauer himself – returns to the small screen in Touch. A preview will air Jan. 25 following American Idol, with the premiere pegged for March 19. Created by Tim Kring (Heroes), the show finds Sutherland playing the father of a mute son with special powers of prediction. (I predict a hit in 2012 – and a few more entertaining “Kiefer walks into a bar …” tabloid stories.)

Mad Men and the Man: With stalled contract negotiations and endless delays, it’s easy to forget that when we last saw Mad Men, it was finishing its best season yet. When the AMC show finally returns with new episodes in March, it will be the pop-cultural TV event of the year. Forget the ad agency – what will come of Don’s hasty marriage to his young secretary (Montreal’s lovely Jessica Paré)? Meanwhile, the Man, Canadian legend Leonard Cohen, releases a new album, Old Ideas, on Jan. 31. At 77, Cohen could still outcharm and out-seduce Don Draper any day of the week.

Caped crusaders: Spider-Man reborn; the Dark Knight hangs up his cape; the Avengers assemble. The Avengers (May 4) will test whether putting an orgy of heroes onscreen at the same time will in any way deter Robert Downey Jr. from stealing scenes. The Amazing Spider-Man (July 3) dumps Tobey Maguire for Andrew Garfield (The Social Network), and Kirsten Dunst for the ever-delightful and intelligent Emma Stone. Last, but not least, Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy ends with The Dark Knight Rises (July 20). As for the next Batman? I hear Tobey Maguire is looking for work.

Two reasons Doomsday may not come soon enough: Paul McCartney’s Valentine’s Day album, and Charlie Sheen’s Anger Management. Sir Paul, who recently remarried, will release an album of love songs on Feb. 7, just in time to make a little mood music for Cupid’s big day. Most of the songs will be romantic standards from the likes of Cole Porter, but the album’s two new songs have cheese ball written all over them: Valentine and Only Our Hearts. And that brings us to Anger Management, Charlie Sheen’s pending comeback slated for a yet-to-beannounced 2012 premiere on the FX network. (CTV bought Canadian distribution rights.) The show will offer a televised take on the mediocre 2003 film starring Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson. That said, I wouldn’t bet against a man fuelled by tiger blood; Charlie could very well be winning again very soon.
