They believed the end of the world is near. They sold their belongings, packed up what they had left, and headed to Arizona. In the process, somehow the idea to blindfold, bind, and tape their five kids crossed this couple’s mind as a good idea.
Adolfo and Deborah Gomez remain held on $50,000 bail, both charged with felony child abuse and endangerment.
Police said the couple and five of their children were traveling to Arizona to visit a sixth sibling, 16, who was living with relatives, when they became stranded Monday in Lawrence, Kan., after their SUV broke down.
A shopper called 911 on Wednesday after she spotted one of the blindfolded children, hands tied and legs bound, sitting near the vehicle. authorities said. The children, ages 4 to 15, are expected to be placed with relatives, officials said.
The couple rented various apartments in suburban Chicago over the years and was evicted at least twice, records show.
In recent months, the family lived in a home in Northlake, where neighbors described the couple as devout Christians who sold off what little possessions they had during a three-day garage sale before leaving town last week.
So what IS the connection between the impending end of the world and abusing your children? Right. There IS no excuse.

People do pretty dumb things and dress dreadfully when hitting Walmart. But bringing your own traveling meth lab AND shoplifting at the same time?
Inconceivable.
A woman was caught cooking meth in her purse using a 20-ounce soda bottle inside of the Walmart store in St. Louis.
The store was immediately evacuated, out of fear for customers’ safety.
St. Louis County Police Lt. Mark Cox said if the meth concoction had spilled or leaked, it would have quickly circulated through the store’s ventilation system, contaminating the building and sickening lots of people.
Sickened them or got them addicted.

Started out with a hiss…how did it end up like this? He just went for mulch…for his pot plants. A registered grower of medical marijuana, Mica Craig reached down to brush what he thought was a stick off some mulch in the garden section of a Washington state Walmart. The stick turned around and sank its fangs into his hand.
Last week’s encounter with a rattlesnake sent Craig, 47, to the hospital, where he said he remained in excruciating pain and may lose feeling in two fingers. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has apologized.
“I reached down to grab the stick to move it out of the way, and the snake stretched out, turned around and got its fangs in my right hand,” he said. “I slung it off and I did a tap dance on it until it was dead.”
“At this point, it appears to be an isolated incident. We are working with a pest management team, which is conducting a sweep of the property to ensure there is no additional rattlesnake activity,” Walmart spokeswoman Kayla Whaling said.
It was not mentioned whether or not Mr. Craig got to keep the snake.
