First Period: The first period ended up scoreless. Both teams goalie’s were phenomenal. Rob Madore for the Express had 8 saves and 1 deflection off of 9 Trenton Titans shots. Trenton’s goalie Brad Phillips had 9 saves and 1 deflection off of 10 express shots. The express had only 1 penalty while the Titans had 2. So there were a total of 3 power plays but neither team was able to capitalize. So it was a defensive first period.
Second Period: Half way through the second period, Trenton Forward Ryan Hayes finally put points on the board after he scored a goal. A few minutes afterwards Express Defensemen Nathan Luiz got called for board checking and was sent to the box for 2 minutes. However, Trenton was unable to score on the power play. But just we got to the 4 minute mark, Express Forward Chaz Johnson got hit with a roughing penalty and the Titans were able to score on that power play.
They scored when Trenton Forward Andy Bombach got a goal with just under 4 minutes left in the period and just 30 seconds into that power play. Afterwards Trenton’s defense dictated the remainder of the 2nd period. Trenton’s offense also improved as they got 10 shots during the 2nd period compared to just 1 for the express.
Third Period: The first 10 minutes of the period was once again dominated by Trenton’s defense until Express Forward Maxime Gratchev fires a deflected puck past Brad Phillips to cut the lead in half. Of course this goal came during a power play as the Express had a one man advantage. But that’s as far as the Express would get. The Titans would score 2 more goals in the final 2 minutes and take a 4-1 victory. The Express was constantly getting shots, they were just unable to put them in the net. Penalties were also a major killer tonight.
