Early Morning Sports Wrap 4-28-12

Last night the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the 2012 NFL draft took place and the Bears were busy. The Bears used the 13th pick of the 2nd round (45th overall) to draft South Carolina Wide Receiver Alshon Jeffery. While the Bears were expected to lean towards either a wide out or an o-lineman, Jeffery just like first round pick Shea McClellin came out of nowhere.

Jeffery was the Gamecocks leading receiver in 2011 but he went largely noticed. Jeffery was the 3rd receiver chosen in the 2nd round after Appalachian State’s Brian Quick was the first pick of the round by St. Louis, and Georgia Tech’s Stephen Hill was stolen away by the Jets before the Bears could pick him. But General Manager Phil Emery said that Jeffery “was the best player on our board at that point so we had to take him.”

Most Bears fans were hoping for an offensive lineman, but the Bears used their 2nd round pick to sure up the receiving core. In the 3rd round the Bears used the 16th pick (79th overall) to draft Oregon State Safety Brandon Hardin. Now I myself was a little skeptical about this pick because the last time the Bears drafted a safety from OSU {Al Afalava}, he was cut before his rookie season ended.

But the Bears did need to boost up the safety position. Later today the Bears will wrap up this years draft. They will have the 16th pick (111th overall) in the 4th round, but no picks in the 5th round because of the Brandon Marshall trade. Then they have the 14th pick (184th overall) in the 6th round and finish the draft with the 13th pick (220th overall) in the 7th round.

I do expect the Bears to draft a couple of offensive lineman and perhaps another safety as well. Also of note, Bears Running Back Kahlil Bell finally signed his tender offer. And today first round draft pick Defensive End Shea McClellin was introduced to the media at Halas Hall today. There were more local college players drafted today. Illinois Safety Tavon Wilson and his Illini teammate,  Offensive Tackle Jeff Allen were drafted by the Patriots and Chiefs respectively in the 2nd round last night. Bears will begin mini-camps very soon.

If the Chicago Wolves are going to win a 5th championship they’re going to have to wait until next season to do it. Last night at the Allstate Arena the San Antonio Rampage took the Wolves to double overtime and escaped with a 3-2 victory to take the series  3 games to 2. The Bulls hope to be more successful than both the Wolves and the Blackhawks as they begin their playoff run this afternoon. Game 1 against the Philadelphia 76ers will be at Noon today at the United Center.  Derrick Rose is said to be healthy as is the entire Bulls roster. But the Bulls are not underestimating this 76ers team, the Bulls split the season series with the Sixers and in both games the Bulls were pushed to their limits.

But I still say the Bulls win in 5. In Baseball the White Sox continued their losing streak with a 10-3 loss to Boston. The Sox streak is now at 4 games and they play game 3 of their 4 game set with the Red Sox at 6pm tonight at The Cell. The Cubs 0n the other hand won their game last night. They began their 3 game series in Philadelphia with a 5-1 victory.

The Cubs have won 3 0f their last 5, and their series in the city of brotherly love continues tonight. Another game taking place this afternoon is the Chicago Rush playing just their 3rd road game of the season. They take on the San Antonio Talons, kickoff is at 2:30. Yesterday I was once again featured on the Chicago Rush’s weekly web post titled “The Friday Fix” you can read that here: http://arenarush.com/news/rush/index.html?article_id=167
