Rush #2 Quarterback Luke Drone made a key mistake in Saturday night’s game.

The outcome should have been much better. The Rush were one step ahead for pretty much the entire game. At the one minute mark in the 4th quarter, Rush Defensive Back Brian Lainhart snagged an interception which should have put the game away. The Rush were up 70-62  with just under a minute remaining but they were unable to run the clock out. Rush Quarterback Russ Michna was sacked on 3rd down to stop the clock. Then backup QB Luke Drone was brought in on 4th down. But disaster struck when Drone fumbled the ball on 4th down and San Jose recovered.

On the SaberCats next possession, Quarterback Mark Grieb threw an 11 yard touchdown pass with 30 seconds remaining. The Cats went for the 2 point conversion and the Rush were unable to stop it, San Jose converted to tie the game at 70. But the Rush would answer back on their next possession as Russ Micha found Jared Perry with 20 seconds left to take a 77-70 lead. The 9,036 fans in attendance seemed to be out of it until Mark Grieb somehow managed to find Cats Receiver Huey Whittaker on a hail mary pass to tie the game at 77 with 10 seconds left.

The Rush attempted a very long game winning field goal but the kick was short which sent the game into overtime. San Jose scored first in the extra period when former Rush Fullback Johnnie Kirton powered it in from 4 yards out to give the SaberCats their first lead of the game 84-77. And the game would end on the Rush’s first overtime possession when Russ Michna threw a pick to San Jose Defensive Back Vince Hill on the Rush’s first play of the overtime period to seal the deal. The Rush lose 84-77, they are 1-1 in overtime this season, they have lost two in a row, they are 1-4 on the road this season {all four losses this season have been away from the Allstate Arena}, and they now fall two games behind San Antonio in the Central Division.

After the game Rush Head Coach Bob McMillen said the following: “On the road you have to zero in on a mentality that the game is never over. We had too many breakdowns after the interception by Lainhart with a minute to play and it allowed San Jose to take advantage.” Russ Michna said: “It’s disappointing that we couldn’t put them away.” Despite not having Vic Hall in the defensive lineup, the Rush didn’t do all that bad on defense. And aside from the crucial turnovers the offense was solid throughout the game. Saturday nights contest totaled for 161 combined points, the fourth most in AFL history.

But despite all of that the Rush are still winless in San Jose, a statistic that has haunted the franchise throughout it’s history. Plus, this is the 4th game this season in which the Rush have struggled to run the clock out. This is an issue that needs to be addressed in practice. But I can assure you that the Rush will be so glad to return to Rosemont this Sunday when the Spokane Shock make their way to the Allstate Arena. The Rush are undefeated on their home turf in 2012 (5-0), but Sunday’s game will be challenging to say the least. Every time the Rush and the Shock meet the games are very physical.

Russ Michna has sustained season ending injuries at the hand’s of the Shock in years past, plus Spokane eliminated the Rush from the playoffs back in 2010. You can expect a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to drop when this one kicks off just after 3pm. I will be in the press box to witness it first hand. Let me take a moment to thank the men and women in uniform who serve this country as we honor Memorial Day today. I’d also like to thank the public service men and women that we voted into office. We may not always agree on the issues, but we understand that all of you have a difficult job to do day in and day out.

Let us also take the time to say a prayer for those who gave their lives in service for our freedom. Here is the box score from Saturday night’s Rush game:
