Q101 Sports Wrap for 6-28-12

The Bulls only had one pick in the 2012 NBA Draft and they used it wisely. With the 29th pick overall, Gar Forman and company chose Kentucky Point Guard Marquis Teague. Teague played under legendary coach John Calipari. And over the last couple of years Kentucky has been producing 1st round draft picks like a factory.

While Derrick Rose is still the top guy on this Bulls team, Teague will provide relief until Rose returns from his torn ACL. Teague’s Kentucky teammates also made noise in this years draft. Power Forward Anthony Davis was taken #1 overall by New Orleans, and Small Forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist went 2nd overall to Michael Jordan’s Charlotte Bobcats.

But the big sleeper in this years draft had to be the Boston Celtics. Late in the first round {21st and 22nd overall}, the Celtics scored big with a couple players who were sliding down some draft boards. At 21 Boston picked Ohio State Power Forward/Center Jared Sullinger. At 22, they picked Syracuse Center Fab Melo.

It is obvious that the Celtics are starting to prepare for a future without the big three {Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce}. The Bulls now have to figure out what they will do with Luol Deng. He plans to have his wrist surgery after the Olympics later this summer, he has been the subject of trade rumors lately.

In baseball the White Sox pulled off a huge victory over the Bronx Bombers. The Sox were down 3-1 to the Yankees in the 9th, when Centerfielder Dayan Viciedo hit a game winning three run home run. Addison Reed picked up his 11th save of the year to hold on for a 4-3 victory over the Yankees. The series continues on Friday night.

The Cubs were off on Thursday, the begin a three game series with Houston at Wrigley Field on Friday.

The Chicago Fire also get back in action as they make a trip to Missouri to take on Sporting Kansas City on Friday night. The Fire are riding a two game winning streak and hope to extend it to three games. The Fire beat SKC back in May as seen here on Q101: http://michelledubiel.com/~micheox4/websites/q101/2012/05/chicago-fire-2-sporting-kansas-city-1-final-score/

And finally some football news…… The Bears are just a few weeks away from training camp in Bourbonnais. And of course I can’t end this sports wrap without talking about the Chicago Rush. The Rush will play their biggest game of the season Saturday as the San Jose SaberCats come to Allstate Arena on a night when the Rush will honor our nations military heroes.

The Rush couldn’t get San Jose at a better time. The Cats are on a two game losing streak, two weeks ago they were upset big time by Kansas City. Last week they were upset again by Spokane in what was the AFL’s highest scoring game of all-time. The previous record for that game was earlier this month when the Rush lost to San Jose 84-77.

So add that with the Rush looking to avenge that record setting loss, the Allstate Arena will blow it’s roof off on Saturday night. Tickets are still available and if your a veteran you can get a free ticket when you show your military I.D. Kickoff is at 7pm from Rosemont.
