The Revolution set to play two dates in September at First Avenue in Minneapolis
Following his death in April, Prince’s iconic backing band the Revolution announced their reunion and intention to play some shows. They have now revealed the dates for those shows. They will play at Minneapolis’ First Avenue on September 2 and 3. The lineup features Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman, BrownMark, Dr. Fink, and Bobby Z., as well as “special guests” Dez Dickerson and André Cymone.
In a press release, the Revolution said, “Only by playing for you, the fans, can we be Prince’s Revolution. He gives Us 2 oneanother now, as we all start to heal and fill forever emptiness with sound. 2gether, we are The Revolution.”
The Revolution were credited on three of Prince’s albums: 1985’s Around the World in a Day, 1986’s Parade, and most memorably, 1984’s Purple Rain. (The accompanying film returned to theaters for a short run following Prince’s passing.) Members of the band also played on 1982’s 1999.
Many may not remember but Dez was featured in the movie “Purple Rain” performing his song “Modernaire” but the track was not included on the Purple Rain soundtrack. He was actually replaced by Wendy Melvoin (Wendy & Lisa) in 1983. Check Dez’ track out below that was excluded from the soundtrack.
Andre Cymone [whom Prince actually lived with as a kid (and Andre’s family)] was on board for three albums and then left to pursue his solo career on Columbia records where he had hits including “Kelly’s Eyes” and “Dance Electric”. He was also one of the producer’s on Jody Watley’s debut album in 1987 along with David Z. Check out some of Andre’s work below.
