Billy Corgan chats with Smashing Pumpkins in 2016
In a long post, Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan may have revealed in an Instagram post that the beloved Chicago alternative band could be doing an album with famed rock producer Rick Rubin. The rumors and leaks continue to swirl around the Pumpkins getting (most of) their original lineup back together for a tour in 2018, now it seems they are working with the acclaimed musical wizard who has previously helped craft classic albums with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Green Day, U2, and many more. Corgan and Rubin recently worked together on his 2017 solo album.’Ogilala’.
Now this all could be Billy playing with fans and those speculating on his musical future but it looks something is happening, and we’re excited to see where it leads.
Last week, Corgan scared fans with an IG photo he shared of himself getting IV fluids, and a sarcastic caption that used the cryptic phrase “making peace”. The always-engaging Corgan then followed this up with silly singing jingle video to assure “I’m fine, I’m fine”
Also last week, we learned that Pumpkins original bassist D’Arcy Wretzky will not be a part of the reunion but she did say the band would tour. Corgan lead a Smashing Pumpkins acoustics tour last year that saw original guitarist James Iha for several noteworthy cameos. Original pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin (who played Corgan when he revived the band in 2005) also has been playing with Corgan in the Pumpkins over the last few years on sporadic tours.
