TOP 5 ALT BANDS THAT SHOULD PLAY THE HALFTIME SHOW

The most seen-television event of the year is almost always ‘THE BIG GAME’, which has evolved to be more than just the NFL championship showdown. It features a flurry of multi-million dollar ads that we all just with instantaneous reactions, and the halftime show. The most-seen live music performance on TV all year is likely thos 20 minutes or so that fall in the halftime show which has in the past featured a whose who in music from U2 to Bruce Springsteen to Michael Jackson.

Last year, Pop queen Lady Gaga got positive reviews for her over-the-top performance, and this Sunday another favorite of the Top 40 crowd, Justin Timberlake will get the sought-after spot.  So what about our beloved alternative bands getting that blockbuster booking? It’s pretty unlikely to see a band who can kill it in a headlining slot at Lollapalooza, some of their adventurous vibes maybe too much for the “just watching for the commercials” audience.

Just for the fun of it, here are 5 bands you’ve heard on 101WKQX that truly ready for the ‘Big Game’. And remember this is just hypothetical, so calm down if you think this is ridiculous, that’s kind of the idea.

THE FOO FIGTHERS

If ever there was a rock band who could break down any door of ‘They Can’t Do that’, the Foo Fighters have done it. They recorded album and music documentary series for HBO in ‘Sonic Highways’. They are returning huge live audiences this summer with 2 night residency at Wrigley Field in July, their second visit to the Friendly Confines. Dave Grohl has been able to show off the larger-than-life personality in countless TV appearances to have that charisma that leaps off the screen, and oh yeah, his band is still kicking rumps to make him bump.

THE KILLERS

These Lollapalooza headliners recently played the halftime show at Australia’s rugby Super Bowl equivalent, the AFL Grand Final with great reviews. They have the songs that drip Americana as Bruce Springsteen for the 2000s generation and they know how to bring the swagger that is on level with an end-zone touchdown celebration. Have you heard ‘the Man’?!

During their AFL week, the Nevada band also played a premiere party show in Melbourne. You can watch that here.

GREEN DAY

They played to rafters at Wrigley Field last fall with a spectacular fireworks finish, not bad for punk band from East Bay right? They are Rock and Roll Hall of Famers who continue to push their creative limits while also stocking a deep  path of hit songs that would play to people who are clicking over from the Puppy Bowl. Billie Joe Armstrong and the boys could really surprise the world with this.

RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS

The Chili Peppers did get to take part in a halftime show with Grammy-winner Bruno Mars in 2014 with “Give It Away’ being segued into Mar’s soul powered performance. The only issue is bassist Flea and guitarist Josh Klingoffer were unplugged during the performance causing speculation to mainstream audience, but we all know they bring the funk. It would be special to see the Kings of songs with references to California to get vindicated and bump it out at the Bowl.

If you thought Janet Jackson had a controversial wardrobe malfunction.just imagine the Peppers bringing back their ‘socks only’ encore for that TV audience? Yeah. maybe that’s not happening.

MUSE

This progressive British trio may be a long shot, but Muse is no stranger to stadium shows as they have played them all over the world with visual extravagant stage effects to deliver eye candy on top of their sci-fi themed anthems. They put this large production to tape on the 2013 live album, ‘Live at Rome Olympic Stadium’. A band who feels they are Star Wars version of a rock act deserves all the attention we could give them.
