MTV was respected for waving the flag of alternative music, but always having an odd sense to present it in more striking visual settings. Their ‘Unplugged’ series gave us Nirvana’s memorable live album, ‘Beavis & Butthead idiotically riffing over Green Day videos blended the humor of the time with the sound of the times, but then somehow they just got focused on teenage moms and bros from the Jersey shore. They may be getting back to that vibe soon…
Spin turned me on this memorable performance on the 4th of July from the ‘MTV Beach House’ in 1993 which featured a new-to-America Radiohead. The English alt icons were then just starting to tour the States, following the release of ‘Pablo Honey’ their debut album. The performance which took place in the Hamptons with celebrity guests like Jon Stewart, was hosted by the sarcastically sweet Kennedy. RH played their definitive hit ‘Creep’ and ‘Anyone Can Play Guitar’.
This should serve as a grand appetizer with hot dogs off the grill for this week’s Radiohead shows at the United Center.
