This is the first time The Red Cross has declared a national blood crisis. According the American Red Cross they have “less than a one-day supply of critical blood types.” It’s the lowest it’s been in over a decade and doctors have been having to make difficult decisions. About 25% of blood needs aren’t being met in the average hospital. The shortage comes from many cancelled blood drives in 2020. They need all types of blood, but especially Type O.
If you’re a healthy person who can make a difference, check out their website on places around Chicago that you can go to give blood and maybe save a life in the process!
