Earlier this week, Lori Lightfoot’s campaign emailed an undisclosed amount of email addresses tied to Chicago Public Schools teachers in an effort to get student volunteers for her reelection campaign.
Lightfoot promoted an externship program while encouraging students to support their parents to vote for Lightfoot in the upcoming mayoral election.
The mayor responded on Thursday saying that she was “unaware” of these efforts until they had already been sent out. She said reaching out to CPS teachers was wrong specifically because she holds the office of mayor, and the campaign staff member now understands why the effort was incorrect.
Lightfoot’s biggest detractors, from the Chicago Teachers Union to her opposition in the mayoral race, have all condemned her actions.
