UFC president Dana White spoke to a crowd of media before the upcoming UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas, Nevada this weekend. White is under fire for being caught slapping his wife in on New Year’s Eve in Cabo, Mexico, ironically weeks before the premier of his new Slap-Fighting League show on TBS.
White noted at the press conference that there was no excuse for his action and that it’s something he would have to “deal with” for the rest of his life. He said, “One thing I do want to clarify … is the people that are defending me. There’s never an excuse. I’m sure you guys have read some of the same stuff that I’ve seen. There’s no defense for this. People should not be defending me, no matter what. All the criticism that I’ve received this week, and will receive in the future, is 100-percent warranted.”
In terms of a possible punishment, he decided he would come up with one on his own. “What should the repercussions be? You tell me. I take 30 days off?” White asked. “How does that hurt me? Me leaving hurts the company. Hurts my employees. Hurts the fighters. Doesn’t hurt me. I could have left in 2016. Do I need to reflect? No, I don’t need to reflect. The next morning when I woke up … I own this. I’m telling you that I’m wrong.”
While I cannot speak for the rest of Q101, I personally find it fascinating that White gets to decide that he can skirt any sort of penalty, especially when he has been outspoken about people even joking about domestic violence in the past.
Hopefully this multi-millionaire can recover from a temporality bruised ego.
