Brandon Johnson will be the next mayor of Chicago

Brandon Johnson, a first-term Cook County board member, former teacher, and union member, defeated Paul Vallas in last night’s runoff mayoral race. Johnson finished second during the city’s initial round of mayoral voting, and last night, in a shock to many, scored the win over Vallas with 51.45% of the vote. The AP called the race at 9:30.

Johnson will take office on May 15.
