Report: Chicago lost the 2016 Summer Games because of bribes

Here is what the Olympics would have looked like in Chicago / Block Club Chicago

Chicago has a long not-so-cherished history of corruption and political shenanigans. You may know an older neighbor who passed away years ago, who somehow still votes in every election. Jokes aside, it is unfortunate but a common part of our city’s history so that’s why it was bittersweet to learn today that Rio de Janiro beat out Chicago and other cities for the 2016 Summer Olympic games with a bribe. Yes, I thought Chicagoans were good at bribes!

The Tribune reported the news today that jailed former governor of Rio Sergio Cabral testified in court this past week to schilling out $1.5 million to the former president of the International Association of Athletics Federations, Lamine Diack,  in exchange for six votes in the meeting that awarded Rio the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Cabral added another $500 payout to Diack’s son for more votes in a separate meeting.

Rio beat out Chicago, Tokyo,  and Madrid to host the 2016 games. That event though became mired in international scandal with many reports on ill-prepared venues for the games, displaced Brazillian forced out of areas, and many other issues. Tokyo will host the 2020 Summer games.

The Olympics have always been associated some form of scandals whether it was athletes doping with PED’s and much more less than honorable behavior.

Ice cream truck fed up with ‘social media influencers’, now they pay double

This is hilarious. You have hundreds of thousands following your blog/vlog/blah blah with your promo code deals and merch, but want an independently owned business that sells ice cream to give you free ice cream? Um, I get your intention there but just pay for it. Just pay for the service someone gives you. If someone approached these ‘influencers’ with a deal that’s one thing, but to selfishly put that on someone hustling in a truck is just lame.

Sorry to the Logan Pauls of the world, you pay double.

45,000 barrels of Jim Beam destroyed in fire.

They say as bourbon ages in barrels, the evaporated spirits are the “angel’s share.”

Looks like the devil just claimed his. 😈

A warehouse fire in Kentucky destroyed about 45,000 barrels of Jim Beam overnight.  Given that one barrel nets you anywhere from 150-200 bottles of the 750mL size, some quick math says at most 9,000,000 bottles were cruelly wasted.  But given that the Chicago Tribune is reporting that the loss only accounts for 1% of Jim Beam’s bourbon inventory….we won’t be going dry anytime soon.  — [eric]

No shot glass? No problem

This photo has many people on Reddit talking. It seems Reddit user PineBadger forgot to bring shot glasses while camping.

I went camping but forgot to bring a shot glass

Not sure how that tasted, and frankly we don’t want to know. But many people were commenting on how they could have just used the solo cups in the photo.

Maybe they were needed for beer pong? Whatever the reason, just imagine what the aftertaste must have been like.

A dad’s drone just helped him save his kids lives

All this dad wanted was to get some cool photos of his kids playing in the water, but instead, he got a glimpse of a large shark swimming towards his children.

New Smyrna Beach in Volusia County on the Atlantic coast of Florida is known as the shark-bite capital of the world. Professional photographer Dan Watson found out first-hand on how often sharks are in those warm Florida waters when he saw one only feet away from his children.

Dan and his wife Sally noticed the shadow swimming closer towards the kids, and they immediately ran towards them screaming to get them out of the water.

He captured this all on the drone and posted the photos on Instagram.

Without that drone, he may have not seen the shark coming. So should we all buy a drone?

This restaurant has an answer to the “not hungry” food stealers

Many people have been out to eat with their significant other and have all heard the same thing at least once, “I’m not hungry”. The result from this response usually ends up in sharing your food together.

Mama D’s, a diner in North Little Rock Arkansas rock offers a menu add-on that helps prevent this sudden hunger from your significant other.

What is the title of this side order you may ask?

Mama D’s named it bluntly on their menu, “My Girlfriend Is Not Hungry”.

The add-on includes an extra order of fries and a choice of two chicken wings or three cheese sticks to your order.

If you were on a date would you get this side order for safe measure?

Organizers of the “Straight Pride Parade” Receive Mysterious Envelopes

Organizers of the “Straight Pride Parade” Receive Mysterious Envelopes

Super Happy Fun America, the group that is trying to make the first \”Straight Pride Parade\” happen in Boston, probably expected to receive some negative feedback…So when three of its members opened their mailbox to find strange envelopes with no return address, they contacted the police.

\”I went out to my mailbox and there was an envelope in there with my name and address, no return address, the back was very heavily taped up and when I shook it I heard stuff shaking around inside\” one of the recipients, Samson Racioppi, told CNN.

Officers shut down the street to examine the suspicious package. When they finally opened the mysterious parcel? They found lots of glitter, and a handwritten letter.

An FBI spokesperson has said the agency \”does not believe the packages pose a threat to public safety\”.

The city recently approved the group\’s public event permit, though they have a few more hoops to jump through before they are legally approved to have a parade. According to the permit, they expect about 2,000 people would attend.

In contrast, Chicago\’s pride parade is only the 12th largest annual LGBT event in the world. It has exceeded 1 million attendees every year since 2013.

Cockroaches becoming “almost impossible” to kill with insecticides

Scientists at Purdue University say cockroaches are becoming even more resistant to insecticides, and will soon be nearly “almost impossible” to kill with chemicals.
Researchers say the bugs are developing a “cross-resistance” to different cocktails of insecticides used by exterminators. That resistance ends up getting passed on to the next generation of roaches.

Some of those roaches are born with immunity to pesticides they’ve never even been exposed to, researchers say. Scientists recommend using other methods like traps, vacuums, or simply keeping things clean.
